Research in the Life Science
at the Weizmann Institute

We are happy to present the Abstracts of the 6th Life Science Day, which provide a vivid description of the different scientific projects in this wide field. This work was conducted by research groups at the Weizmann Institute during the years 2004-2006. These studies cover an exceptionally wide spectrum of topics and experimental approaches, ranging from the molecular level to the extraordinary complexity of a functioning organism.

Several themes that are the hallmarks of modern biological research are readily apparent when glancing at the abstracts. Studies of seemingly disparate biological systems readily converge when the underlying molecular mechanisms are elucidated. Some of the most exciting findings today derive from interdisciplinary approaches, which provide fresh and powerful ways to tackle seminal biological problems. In the convergence of interdisciplinary approaches the Weizmann Institute is uniquely poised due to the extensive interactions not only within the faculties of Life Sciences but also with the other faculties on campus. These interactions foster novel collaborations leading to original findings.

We look forward to an exciting day, which will reflect not only the continued contributions of existing research groups but also the input of new faculty members that were recently recruited and provide a fresh outlook. We are always pleased by the exceptional group of students and post docs that are behind the diverse and extensive work that will be presented.

The broad network of biological research projects at the Weizmann Institute is supported not only by external research grants and special donations, both listed at the end of the abstracts, but also by Research Centers and Institutes that were established within the Weizmann Institute, and are aimed at enhancing and facilitating the unique spirit of innovation and collaboration.

Finally, we would like to thank Yeda Research & Development Co. Ltd. for financial support, Prof. Idit Shachar and Prof. Avihai Danon for organizing the open day, The Graphics Department for editing the Abstract, and Karni Hertz Maman for coordination.
