INSTRUMENTATION

Micromass ZQ

The ZQ Detector is a quadrupole mass analyzer that can determine the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of diverse analytes.  It is equipped with an ESI probe for Electrospray analysis and is connected to a MassLynx data station.

Mass Range: 2 to 4000 AMU
Sensitivity:  Positive ion typically, 1 pg (5-μL injection of 0.2 pg/μL).
Conditions: Sample directly infused at 5 μl/min

Field Desorption (FD)

Waters Micromass GCT_Premier mass spectrometer with accurate mass mode.  Operating in FD Mode of Carbotec 10Micron Tungsten FD Emitter with an extraction voltage of 12,000 V.

Mass Range: 50 – 4000 AMU.
Sensitivity: low- and sub-pg.
Conditions: Sample directly infused by the emitter.

Maldi

AB SCIEX 5800 MALDI TOF/TOF System equipped with a Nd: YAG (355 nm) laser with 1 KHZ pulse.
Mass Range:
Reflector mode -2 to 6000 AM
Linear mode – 2 to 60,000 AMU
Sensitivity: around 1 pmol
Conditions: Samples are mixed with the appropriate matrix and placed on an Opti-TOF 384-well MALDI plate.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP MS)

Agilent 7700s ICP-MS System for ultra-trace (ppb) elemental analysis applications. It features high sensitivity and a wide range of interference removal technologies with an ORS3 collision/reaction cell that uses He mode for unknown and variable interferences, or reaction mode for the effective removal of intense interferences in known and consistent matrices. The samples are introduced into the instrument via an autosampler system.

Thermo’s FlashEA® 1112 CHN

This Elemental Analyzer determines the amount of C, H, and N in organic or inorganic compounds. Samples are weighed in a tin capsule and introduced into a combustion reactor by an autosampler. When the sample enters the reactor, contained in the special furnace and heated to 900 – 1000°C, a small volume of pure oxygen is added to the system and this helps burn the organic or inorganic material, converting the sample into elemental (simple) gases. A separation column and TCD detector allows the user to determine the concentrations of elements.

Waters PicoTag Work Station

The Waters PicoTag Work Station for gas phase Hydrolysis Hewlet Packard 1090 HPLC is equipped with a Diode array Detector and autoinjector with a PC-based Chemstation database, utilizing Amino Quant chemistry for the analysis. Waters 2690 Alliance HPLC equipped with fluorescence and Diode Array detectors and auto injector, utilizing AccQ.Tag and/ or Pico Tag chemistries for analysis of Hydrolysates and some physiological amino acids (detection range of 5 - 3000 pmole).

FT Raman

Bruker FT RAMAN - RFS 100/S Ge Diode detector Spectral range of 3600 - 70 cm-1  (stokes shift) and 100-2000 (anti-Stokes shift) with a target area of 100 µm . It is controlled by PC-based OPUS spectral software.

Micro Raman

Renishaw Micro Raman Imaging Microscope Controlled via PC-based software, with temperature control, xyz motion stage, laser 633 nm, and Grams 2c spectral manipulation software. Magnification ranges from x5 to x100, for a variety of samples.

MICRO FT-IR

MICRO FT-IR instrument attached to an IR/Optical Microscope. IRscope II, with Transmission and reflection, measurement modes. 15X IR Objective Measured Area: 20 µm Minimum. Mid range MCT detector 7000-600 cm-1.

Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

SDT Q 600 – TA Instruments measure weight change (TGA) and temperature differences (DTA) on the same sample from ambient to 1500oC at heating rates ranging from 0.1 to 100oC/min. Two furnaces that purge gases are available, for inert atmosphere - nitrogen and for oxidizing atmosphere – air.

Sample Pans: Platinum, Alumina (Al203)

Volume Capacity Platinum: 40 μL; 110 μL (recommended for TGA-DTA studies)

Alumina: 40 μL; 90 μL (recommended for DSC-TGA studies).

ZETA

The Zetasizer system provides measurement of size, molecular weight, mobility and improved sensitivity of zeta potential on dispersed particles and molecules in solution.
Malvern’s Zetasizer Nano ZSP uses DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) to measure size of colloids, nanoparticles and molecules ranging 0.3nm-10microns,  zeta potential range of > +/-500mV and a Molecular weight range of <1000Da - 2 x 107Da.

CD Spectrometer

Chirascan™-plus ACD is a ultra-sensitive, high-speed, automated CD spectrometer. It is a powerful new tool in protein formulation screening and biocomparability studies.
