Admission Criteria for the WIS Early Childhood Center

  עברית

The WIS Early Childhood Center is intended for children with at least one parent who is a scientist/student/postdoc/staff scientist/member of the technical staff of the Weizmann Institute, and with two parents who work or study full time. This latter criterion does not necessarily apply to children of women scientists or to children of young scientists during their first year in Israel. Additional exceptions will be examined with full transparency on a case-by-case basis by the admissions committee.

In accordance with our survey, quotas have been established for various categories of Institute employees and students. The demand for spots in each category was also taken into account in establishing the quotas, which are re-examined approximately every two years.

Below are the criteria for the various categories, in descending order of priority:

Scientists

  1. Children who attended the Center during the previous year
  2. Children of women scientists (from senior scientists to professors)
  3. Children of first-year senior scientists returning from abroad
  4. Children of single mothers (not including divorced or unmarried couples living together)
  5. Children of other scientists, including staff scientists and senior interns

Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Interns

1.   Children who attended the Center the previous year and whose parents

expect to complete their studies no sooner than March 1

  1. Children of single mothers (not including divorced or unmarried couples living together)
  2. Children of female students
  3. Children of all students, postdoctoral fellows, and interns (quotas are75% female employees and 25% male employees)

*Those children who are not presently at the Center will be admitted only on the condition that the parent who is a student has at least a year left to complete his or her degree or fellowship (July 31, at the earliest). The Human Resources Department will confirm the completion date with the Feinberg Graduate School.

*Students who expect to complete their studies in the middle of the year, and whose children are already in attendance at the Center from the previous year, will be asked to sign a clause on the registration form obligating them to pay a full year's tuition. This clause will insure against loss if the student wishes to withdraw the child from the Center in the middle of the year, but no replacement is found among the children on the waiting list.

*Students who expect to complete their studies in the middle of the year and travel to a post-doc abroad, and thus have no choice but to take their children out of the Center before the end of the year, will be asked to sign a clause on the registration form stating the estimated departure date, giving the Center a head start in filling the slot. If no replacement is found, the leaving student will commit to paying the full year’s tuition.

*Children of students who will be finishing their studies before the following academic year will not be allowed to continue, even if they have been registered as continuing children in the Center.

Administrative & Technical Staff

Acceptance of children of new administrative employees to the Center (not including employees on the tenure track) is conditional on the terms of their hiring, which must extend at least until the end of the school year (i.e.  July 31). The Human Resources Department will check into this with the supervisors.

  1. Children who attended the Center during the previous year
  2. Children of single mothers (not including divorced or unmarried couples living together)
  3. Children of female administrative staff
  4. Children of all administrative and technical staff (quotas are 75% female employees and 25% male employees)

For all members of the Institute:

  • In all cases of the parent’s completion or termination of studies or work at the Weizmann Institute of Science for any reason, the Institute reserves the right to terminate the participation of the child in the Early Childhood Center and to insist that the child be transferred to another facility. This will be in conjunction with the date of termination of studies or work at the Institute.

*If the number of children enrolled exceeds the quota for any given category, admittance

  will be decided by lottery.

Exceptions will be examined on a case-by-case basis by the admissions committee for the Early Childhood Center-Weizmann Institute of Science Campus.
