Open positions in fast-MAS solid-state & solution NMR

We are (still) looking for additional group members in the field of innovative NMR spectroscopy on proteins (PhD students, postdocs, one permanent researcher position).

We are a young and prospering group, our focus being the characterization of protein structure, dynamics and interactions, using and developing sophisticated solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy methods. In the past, we have mostly committed ourselves to the development of innovative NMR methodology. Now we apply both new and established methods to better understand the behavior of various proteins e. g., enzymes and proteins involved in signalling. In particular, we are one of the leaders for solid-state NMR methods development. (See a recent composition in Accounts of Chemical Research:

DOI: 10.1021/acs.accounts.8b00055 ) Current interests are the protein dynamics playing a role for enzymatic function as well as protein-small molecule interactions - and the methods for their respective elucidation. Our lab has top-notch 800 and 700 MHz high-field NMR magnets used for both, solids and solution. We have newest equipment, including two probes for fastest MAS currently commercially available

(111 kHz).

The lab will transition to TU Dortmund ("chair for biomolecular NMR

spectroscopy") in spring 2019, where - in conjunction with the MPI for molecular physiology – excellent research opportunities and a generous setting for brand new equipment and personnel in a new building are opening up. Therefore, we have multiple positions to fill, and one researcher (postdoc) position to be filled will be made permanent after satisfactory performance (akademischer Rat, verbeamtet, employee of the state).

 

The preferred candidates should be knowledgeable in both, biochemistry and NMR characterization of proteins, including all aspects from protein production, assignments, structure calculation, and basics of dynamics.

Project could range from methodological ones to purely bio projects, including sophisticated techniques like insect cells etc., and can be in close conjunction with our collaborators at the CCB and MPI in Dortmund.

Applicants should be devoted chemists/biochemists/physicists craving for exciting structural biology data, experts in leading-edge technical concepts, and foster scientific exchange with their fellow coworkers. A social and committed personality, a high level of detail and strong commitment are also an important prerequisites.

 

The group is (and will be) regular member of a multitude of science platforms fostering high-quality interdisciplinary research and scientific exchange, for example the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV, granted last Thursday, and the Max-Planck graduate school IMPRS, but also the SFB 1309 on epigenetics and the SFB on molecule dynamics and transitions. German language skills, though not a prerequisite, are a strong plus for teaching involvements.
