Research position at CICECO – University of Aveiro, Portugal

A researcher position (funded up to 3 years) is available at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials (University of Aveiro) to work on DNP surface enhanced solid-state NMR of materials, in the framework of the FCT-funded project (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028747) “Surface CO2 species formed in porous materials for environmental applications studied by dynamic nuclear polarization NMR”.

Project description
The main goal of the project lies in obtaining atomic-level insights on surface interactions between the nanoporous materials and various species formed upon adsorption of strategically prepared gas mixtures that mimic industrial flue gas streams relevant in post-combustion CO2 capture applications. Physi- and chemisorbed gas speciation will be studied in distinct nanoporous organic-inorganic hybrid materials available at CICECO. To characterize adsorbed gas species, the samples will be packed in a home-made closed system. This apparatus will be used to adsorb gases into the porous materials at variable-pressure and controlled temperature and moisture levels. The aim of this position is to further develop the DNP-related methodology (sample preparation, polarizing agents and radio-frequency pulse schemes) to study a number of adsorbed molecules in nanoporous materials of relevance in catalysis and environmental applications. The candidate will also have the possibility to work between different projects with the opportunity to tackle industrially relevant problems.
The installation of a DNP spectrometer in Aveiro is expected in 2019 (second semester) and the candidate should play an active role in setting up the DNP system. The project entangles the support of Bruker Biospin as well as other DNP-related partners.

Requirements / Qualifications:

- Prospective applicants should hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials science, or related fields;

- Good English communication skills (oral + written) are necessary;

- Relevant publications related to the project;

- Previous experience in developing DNP and/or NMR methods, maintaining and implementing hardware and/or in the analysis of data would be an advantage;

- Good social and communication skills will be expected since the ability to collaborate with other groups and contribute to create a good working atmosphere will be of prime importance to ensure lively scientific interactions.

Facilities & Aveiro City

The successful candidate will take advantage of an interdisciplinary environment with privileged access to a wide range of equipment: multiple solid-state characterisation spectrometers including 6 liquid/solid-state NMR spectrometers [Liquids: 300 and 500 MHz; Solids: 400, 500, 700 and 800 MHz magnets] with Bruker AV III HD consoles and a wide range of probes. A number of powder/single-crystal X-ray diffractometers and multiple microscopes (TEM/STEM, SEM, HRTEM). The lab is equipped with shared computer clusters containing several compiled codes to perform advanced computational studies. Collaboration with CICECO senior modelers is encouraged. CICECO (http://www.ciceco.ua.pt) is the largest Portuguese institute in the field of materials science and engineering, with over 370 people from different scientific areas. Aveiro is a lovely university town located between the two major cities (Porto & Lisbon) and has a very high quality of life with great weather and food, beautiful lagoons and stunning beaches along its coastline.
