Structural Biology Core Facility Manager - biomolecular NMR

Job Description

The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the structural biology core facility. The manager will be in charge of a number of different instruments (NMR spectrometers, X-ray crystallography and small angle X-ray instrumentation) and will ensure that these instruments are completely functional. The manager will be working directly with the scientific community, faculty and customers (affiliated hospitals), to train students and other employees to help measure structural properties of biomacromolecules. In addition, the manager will be responsible for managing the financial records and budgets for the facility. She/he will maintain records and compile data, including interpretation and analysis. She/he will provide overall oversight and management for the facility, its equipment, inventories, and supplies.  She/he will work strategically and collaboratively with department leadership and stakeholders, promoting usage and effectively marketing the services provided ensuring continuing growth and usage of the facility.


  • Maintenance of the NMR facility
    • The biomolecular NMR facility at Brown University consists of a 500 and 850 MHz spectrometer (both Bruker) operating at 11.7 and 19.97 T respectively.  The facility manager will be expected to train researchers in use of the instruments, assist in the development and implementation and analysis of experiments, and diagnose and solve hardware and software problems. Facility maintenance will also include ordinary upkeep of the instruments, inclusive of software updates, calibrations, part replacement, coordination of service with vendor, and cryogen fills.
  • Contribution to the upkeep of the X-ray and SAXS instrumentation
    • The biomolecular X-ray facility at Brown University consists of a Rigaku FRE+ rotating anode X-ray generator with a robotic crystal mounting system for diffractometry, and a BioSAXS-1000 instrument for small angle scattering. The manager will see to upkeep of the instruments, diagnose and solve hardware and software problems, schedule usage, train new users, and ensure an adequate supply of gases and cryogens as needed for instrument operation.
  • Contribution to the upkeep of proteomics instrumentation
    • The EPSCoR Proteomics facility incorporates several instruments for spectrophotometric, calorimetric, and chromatographic analysis of proteins and other biomolecules. The manager will see to upkeep of the instruments, assist in the development and implementation of experiments, diagnose and solve hardware and software problems, maintain public schedules for usage, train users, and ensure that any gases necessary for instrument operation are available.
  • Structural Biology Facility business operations
    • The Structural Biology Facility at Brown University is a shared use facility. The business operations of the facility consist of recharge rate setting, invoicing, fiscal reporting, maintaining usage statistics, communicating service offerings through an effective website, and providing outstanding customer service to the research investigators.  The manager will interface with the Director of Research Operations to develop accounting and budgeting practices that are compliant with Federal regulations that govern the Brown University research enterprise.


  • Minimum 5 year experience in biomolecular NMR spectroscopy research, as demonstrated by publications
  • PhD degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping and report preparation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • NMR software expertise – data recording, analysis and evaluation, structure calculation and refinement
  • Ability to analyze data
  • Experience developing/ and managing a budget as well as projections
  • Good marketing and business skills
  • Solid computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
