Our overall interest is in the shift of chemical and energy related processes from entrenched high temperature catalysis based on fossil fuels to low temperature sustainable catalysis using electricity and light as renewable energy sources. All this is directed to the prevention of emission of green-house gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, through abatement reactions and non-carbon emitting reaction. To realize such a paradigm shift, the scientific challenge is to use and activate “inert” small molecules such as nitrogen and oxygen from air, water and carbon dioxide. Analysis of natural processes such as photosynthesis, hydrocarbon oxidation and nitrogen fixation guide us to the development of inorganic catalysts that react using renewable electricity and/or sunlight as energy sources.
