The Archives was established in 1973 in order to document the history of the Institute, and its scientific, educational, and cultural contributions from its beginnings; consequently, to serve its administration.
The Archives is housed at the Wix Library building.
Computerization
From 1992 on, the Archives collection is operated by a computerized system
which enables textual retrieval. Thus, written material, photos and publications
can be retrieved immediately. An additional software and equipment was obtained
for scanning and retrieving of written material.
In 2005 a new database management software system has been acquired by the Weizmann Institute
for the joint use of the Weizmann Institute Archives, the Photographic Laboratories and
Chaim Weizmann Archives, the aim being the unification of some of the collections,
especially photographs. Using the same software will enable joint use of the integrated database.
The scanning process of the Weizmann Institute Archives including that of extremely delicate paper
documents, is carried out by the Photographic Laboratories on a regular basis.
