The 2013 International Board Meeting: a celebration of science and philanthropy
The 65th Annual General Meeting of the International Board of the Weizmann Institute of Science, held November 3-6, 2013, brought together old and new friends of the Institute and offered a platform for the celebration of multiple visionary gifts to the Institute towards the advancement of scientific research. The Opening Gala, on November 3, shone a spotlight on new scientists, including computer scientist Dr. Ohad Shamir and biologist Dr. Ravid Straussman (see related stories). The event also included a special performance of the Israeli Opera accompanied by the Ra’anana Symphonette Orchestra. The week included events dedicated to a spectrum of scientific disciplines, from personalized medicine to quantum electronics and from bioinformatics to space and planetary science—and the important relationship between science and philanthropy.
The Festive Open Session of the International Board included the traditional bestowing of the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Award for Innovative Investigation. This year’s recipient was Prof. Amos Tanay of the Department of Biological Regulation and Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, who is developing innovative computational methods for the analysis of genomic data, an area which promises to have a major impact on the personalization of medicine.
