Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are a major mechanism by which protein function is
determined. PTMs may alter both structure and function of proteins to affect their binding
interactions, cellular localization and stability. However, with more than 200 different types of protein
modifications, the complexity of the PTM network and the underlying principles of their regulation
is still largely unexplored. Importantly, decoding the PTM code should provide novel insight on
aberrations in PTM regulation in human diseases. To advance this important frontier the annual
meeting of the ISBMB will focus on Cellular and Biochemical aspects of PTM regulation.
