Q1: I am trying to access an e-journal via Pubmed and it won't let me. What should I do?
A: Try to access e-journals via the Libraries' homepage (select Library Catalog or EJM, Journal/Series Manager).
We recommend accessing Pubmed (and generally all our subscribed databases) from the Library’s site and not from a bookmark because of occasional changes in the optimal mode of access to the database and to full text articles via that database.Q2: I have used the citation index until recently and now I am not able to use it. What url should I use for finding papers via authors, subject, location, etc. - as we have done until now?
A: There has recently been a change in the ISI Web of Knowledge portal. If you have been using a bookmark, the change does not show on your link.I suggest that you access it via our web site, under the category, databases. There, you will find, in alphabetical order, "ISI Web of Science" or the broader portal "ISI Web of Knowledge"
We recommend not to bookmark it, in case any future changes will be made.
Q3: (Ebooks) I did not succeed in finding an ebook using the Library Catalog. I entered the author’s last name in E-resources and found that the book is on the shelf. Would you please explain how this works?
A: When you search for the author of a book, you must enter the authors' surname (last name) and the initials of his first name/s in the Library Catalog. You click on the name that you are looking for and you get all the books written by him that are available at the Weizmann Institute libraries, one after the other.
If an e-book exists you should see a web link saying: e-book. If no e-book exists, you get only information about printed editions.
You can check by book title or keywords as well (if you have the information of course) either in the Library Catalog or the EBM, eBook Manager.Remote Access
Q1: How do I access databases and e-journals from off-campus computers?
Q2: When I am overseas and want to access the library’s resources, for example, accessing electronic journals, how can I do it?
Q3: I would like to obtain a username and password for tdnet access while I am out of the country.A: In order to access all Weizmann databases and electronic journals while away, one should use the SecureID option or access through Athens. You can obtain more information at our "How to Connect" page.
A SecureID card and instructions can be obtained at the Computing Center.Q4: When I try to open Proquest (dissertations or a journal) while at the institute, I receive the Athens authentication screen, which disables access, in this case. How can I remove this option and enable direct access to Proquest?
A: You have two options:
Either erase the Cookies, History, Cache, Authenticated Sessions (temporary internet files) or try using another browser if this doesn’t help. You can also contact us or the support groups in the Computing Center (tel. 4444).Q5: How do I use Athens in order to access Weizmann's Library resources from home or abroad?
A: First of all, before you try to access any resource from off-campus (remote) locations, you must authenticate to the Athens system. In order to do it correctly, you should:
1. Go to library homepage: http://www.weizmann.ac.il/library
2. Click “Athens” (under "Remote Access") to get the "Authentication Page"
3. Enter your Weizmann Username and Password, and click "Login"
You will then receive a list of online resources accessible from off-campus (remote) locations, from which you can choose you desired resource. Please notice that popular resources are appearing at the beginning of the list.Q6: I am trying to authenticate to Athens (I have already entered my Weizmann username and password), but I keep getting an error message. What do I do wrong?
A: Authenticating to Athens is enabled only by entering your Weizmann single sign-on (universal Novell password) username and password. In some rare cases you might have a different kind of Weizmann username and password without even knowing it. In order to fix this, you should turn to your faculty administrator or secretary, or to Vered Mehani-Harush (2287) at the Computing Center. If this doesn't seem to fix the problem, or if you encounter any additional errors please contact us at: Athens@weizmann.ac.ilQ7: The list received after authenticating to Athens is compiled of strange names like: ScienceDirect and Gale, that don't mean anything to me. How can I find a specific journal or article I'm interested in?
A: The list is compiled of all resources available for off-campus (remote) access. The resources are ordered alphabetically by their names (usually the name of the publisher or the service). However, if these names are meaningless to you, please notice that popular options appear at the beginning of the list. You can locate a specific journal by searching it in the "Journal/Series Manager", or a single article by searching Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus or OneSearch.Q8: Why do I need Athens for searching resources like PubMed or Google Scholar? They are free anyway!
A: Even though PubMed and Google Scholar themselves are indeed free databases, access to most articles' full text via them is available only if you are located inside an academic institute which has subscriptions to full text resources. The Athens system recognizes you as a Weizmann user (even though you're located outside) and hence immediately lets you to access the full text of most papers.Q9: How can I read Nature/Science from out of campus?
A: You first need to authenticate to the Athens system:
1. Go to library homepage: http://www.weizmann.ac.il/library
2. Click “Athens” (under "Remote Access") to get the "Authentication Page"
3. Enter your Weizmann Username and Password, and click "Login"
You will then receive a list of online resources accessible from off-campus (remote) locations. Links to Science and Nature magazines appear in the beginning of the list.Q10: Is it possible to use Athens when I'm located inside Weizmann?
A: No. When you're inside Weizmann you're allowed to access library resources based on your IP address. Athens should be used only when you're not using a Weizmann network computer.Q11: I'm using my own personal laptop in order to surf the Web. Everything worked fine until I have recently connected to Athens from home. Since then, I always receive a request to enter my username and password, even when I'm inside and my laptop is connected to the Weizmann network. What can I do?
A: In some rare cases Athens cookies could be saved to your computer and interfere with your further connections to online library resources. If you encounter this problem, it is highly suggested that you clean cookies and temporary internet files from your browser. Usually that should solve the problem. However, if access from within Weizmann still doesn't work, please contact us at: Athens@weizmann.ac.ilQ12: I'm trying to access an article within the Weizmann network (I'm located inside Weizmann!). When I click the article's PDF link, I receive a request for my username and password and an Athens link besides them. What do I do?
A: This kind of situation usually means that the Weizmann Library doesn't have a subscription to the full text version of the article you're looking for. Athens cannot help you here since you're on campus.
If you're still seriously interested in the article, you can try ordering it from other academic institute using the "Article Order" form.
Please notice that in order to create an order you should have a valid Weizmann budget account. If you don't have one of your own, please turn to your advisor or faculty administrator.Q13: I have authenticated to Athens, but I can't see the PDF version of an article I'm interested in. I still receive a request to enter my username and password in order to see full text. Why?
A: This kind of situation usually means that the Weizmann Library doesn't have a subscription to the full text version of the article you're looking for. In order to be certain, you can try to access the PDF next time you're inside Weizmann. Athens cannot help you access a paper that is not accessible from within Weizmann.
If you're still seriously interested in the article, you can try ordering it from other academic institute using the "Article Order" form.
Please notice that in order to create an order you should have a valid Weizmann budget account. If you don't have one of your own, please turn to your advisor or faculty administrator.Q14: I received a link to an article by email, but when I click it from home, I can't seem to get the full text. Why?
A: Unfortunately, for the mean time, Athens is not able to link you directly to a certain article unless you follow its authentication process directly. You must first authenticate to the system:
1. Go to library homepage: http://www.weizmann.ac.il/library
2. Click “Athens” (under "Remote Access") to get the "Authentication Page"
3. Enter your Weizmann Username and Password, and click "Login"
And then use one of the listed resources in order to find the paper.Reference Management
Q1: I want to learn and use EndNote for my PhD proposal. I see references on how to use it in your info retrieval category, but how do I access it? Since you refer to this software, I assume one can download it somehow.
A: You actually buy EndNote. You have several options:
One is through the Purchasing Department (RECHESH). I understand that they work with local suppliers and the cost might be higher.
Another option is to buy it directly from EndNote. You can either request that it be shipped to you or you can download it, which means
a credit card (private) payment. I recommend that you first check with your department's administrator, for information about getting a refund.
Note: if you are already a registered EndNote customer, you are entitled to a discount.
You also can try using (free) Endnote Web or another web operated bibliography manager - RefWorks.
You can find more information on our reference management page or contact us for further advice.
