Collections

The Library contains books and periodicals on various subjects of the life sciences and medicine including: biology, zoology, botany, biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience and brain research, endocrinology, genetics, cancer research, as well as chemistry, environmental sciences and material science and other subject areas in current journal subscriptions, bound volumes of journals, and books.
Books are shelved by Dewey Decimal Classification scheme numbers (the life science and chemistry books are integrated within the scheme).
Reference material (such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, guide books etc.) are shelved separately also by Dewey Decimal Classification following the Librarians' desk and behind the photocopying room.
To locate Library material items, please use the Library Catalog.

Periodicals

The life sciences periodicals are arranged alphabetically on the main floor and in the gallery.
The chemistry periodicals collection is shelved alphabetically in the gallery on separate shelves (stacks 15 - 18). The current issues and few latest issues of each journal are on display in a special section.
Some life sciences back volumes of periodicals are located in the gallery (stacks 19 onwards).
Older volumes of some life sciences and chemistry periodicals can also be found in the Central Library (Building 69).

The location of each journal can be found in the Library Catalog.

Periodicals are not available for loan, except for special purposes (scanning or color photocopying), and then a special form must be completed (please ask the Librarian). Some periodicals can be found both in print and electronic form.

Chemical Abstracts

The library holds the Chemical Abstracts volumes prior to 1958 only in the Abstracts section. Most of the Chemical Abstracts material is accessible electronically through SciFinder.

The Library System provides access to electronic resources. Check our databases & electronic journals for relevant collections.

Library Services

For the detailed information on all library services, please click here.

Below please see some issues that are specific for Life Sciences & Chemistry Library:

Library orientation instructions are given to new students at the beginning of each academic year & during the year upon request.
Returning books: A special box for returning books is situated near the telephone in the Library entrance hall.
Book renewal can be done in person, by phone (3695/6), or by e-mail if no other reader is waiting for the book.

Books Reserved for Courses (list)

The reserved books collection serves the students, and has special lending policies.
As the books are kept in special locked bookcases, readers requesting these books should address the librarians.

The reserved books may be used in the Library during the day (after the card has been filled in), or borrowed overnight, or for weekends. The books can be borrowed from 15:30, and must be returned to the Library by 10:00 the next morning. A fine will be imposed on overdue reserved books.
Check also the Feinberg Graduate School site for full texts of online course material.

Study Rooms

The Library has two closed rooms, situated in the gallery, for the use of library readers.
Priority in use of these rooms is given to groups of people who wish to study together.
The rooms can be reserved for a particular date and time by application (download form) to the librarian,
at least a day before.
Fax the complete form to 4189 or scan and e-mail the librarians.

Lists of New Arrivals

New books lists are sent regularly to all Life Sciences and Chemistry faculty staff and students by e-mail.

New Books on Display

New books received in the library are placed on a special display bookcase (closed after regular working hours for one week). During this period they are not available for loan, but readers can order a book for loan by writing their names (without the date) on the book card.
A note that the book is available is sent to the reader who requested it when the book begins circulating. The book is then placed on a shelf behind the librarian's desk, and marked by a blue or black strip with the reader's name written on it.

Photocopying Self Service

The Library provides three public self-service photocopiers, which are situated in a special room near the Librarians' desk. The photocopiers are operated by card, and two of them are also coin operated. They accept coins from NIS 0.10 to NIS 10.00, and cannot give change.
The card only photocopy machine is complete with a document feeder.
Photocopying cards (containing 50, 100, 250 and 500 units) are supplied in the Library upon presentation of a printed order made through Internal Services. Please note that purchase of the photocopy card by cash is not possible in the Life Sciences & Chemistry Library but in the Central Library & and at the Cashier's Office (which accepts both cash and checks) in the Stone building only.

Service by order
(performed by library staff in either print copy or PDF formats).

Computers and Laptops

The Library provides several workstations (PC's and Mac) for library users (most of them are located on the main floor, and one in the gallery's reading area). Material can be downloaded on a disk-on-key, or sent to one's e-mail addresses only (either an Institute or an Internet e-mail) . Printing is available by means of photocopy card.

Laptop connections to the campus network are available (please consult the Librarian).
Wireless Internet access is available for private laptops (users must have an appropriate wireless card). Institute users wishing to use the Institute network should use a Secure ID card. For instructions of how to use your laptop in the wireless zone, click here.

"Bookworm" Collection

The Life Sciences' Library has a book collection for leisure reading called "Bookworm", which is available to Weizmann staff and students.
The collection is based on donations. Gifts of diverse types (novels, science fiction, etc.), and in various languages (Hebrew, English, Russian, French, Spanish) will be most welcome.
When borrowing a book from this collection, there is no need to sign a book card.

Please contact the Librarians during working hours,
in person, by phone (3695/6), or by e-mail regarding services, collections etc.
