Current Research Interests My research deals with several topics in particle
physics and in condensed matter physics. Solitons are particle-like solutions of
non-linear wave equations. I have dealt with many properties of
solitons, concentrating on solitons that owe their stability to topological
reasons. I have treated the nature of condensed
phases that appear in aggregates of chiral molecules. This includes the
blue phases that in cholesteric liquid crystals of short molecules and the
similar structures that appear in bundles of long DNA molecules. I have investigated systems with phononic
band gaps, namely composite crystals that can be designed so that at given
frequency ranges they may serve as sound insulators. Sound at these
frequencies cannot propagate inside the structure and is exponentially
damped.
