14. Detailed Biosafety Level 1 Requirements (BL1)
Standard Microbiological Practices. No Human Pathogens Access
- Keep the laboratory doors closed when experiments are in progress.
- Report any evidence of rodent or insect infestations.
Personal Protection
- Do not eat, smoke, drink, or apply cosmetics.
- Wear gloves, lab coats as appropriate.
- Remove gloves, lab coats when leaving to non-lab areas.
- Wash hands after completing experimental procedures and before leaving the laboratory.
Work Practices
- Do not mouth pipette. Use mechanical pipetting devices.
- Minimize the use of needles.
- Design procedures to MINIMIZE aerosol formation.
- Keep work surfaces uncluttered to facilitate spill clean-up.
Decontamination Procedures
- Disinfect laboratory work surfaces daily, and immediately after a spill.
- Contaminated liquid or solid waste must be docontaminated and disposed of, according to waste disposal regulations. (Refer to Section 19.)
