Using a single electron transistor that is mounted on the tip of a scan probe system we image the compressibility of a high mobility two dimensional electron system in the quantum Hall regime. Our measurements reveal the microscopic nature of the incompressible strips that separate the various quantum Hall phases. When current is flown through the system our technique allows us to image the microscopic voltage distribution across the sample.
