NMR methodology development across disciplines of magnetic resonance

This 3 year PhD studentship is available to start on 1st of September 2019. The studentship is fully funded for 36 months and covers tuition fees and an annual stipend (starting at £15,009 per annum) for a candidate satisfying EPSRC criteria:

The programme seeks to advance NMR methodology, with an emphasis on liquid-state NMR, however, solids and in vivo applications will also be considered. Part of the program will align with the on-going research in applying and developing further recently introduced SHARPER methodology, but also in other hot topics of the day, such as analysis of complex mixtures, pure-shift methodology and the emerging field of benchtop NMR.

Access will be provided to six 300-800 MHz NMR spectrometers (several equipped with cryoprobes) in the School of Chemistry central NMR facility. The PhD student will be working alongside a recently appointed postdoctoral research associate working on an EPSRC funded 3 year project: “SHARPER NMR: fast and accurate analysis of molecules, reactions and processes” but his/her remit will not be limited to this topic. The successful candidate will possess, or expect to obtain, a first class or upper-second class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) chemistry or physics, an aptitude and strong interest in developing their skills in area of NMR methodology and computer assisted interpretation of NMR spectra.
