Post-doctoral assistant position at Ghent University

The department of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry at Ghent University has available a 3 year postdoctoral position in natural product science, with a strong focus on NMR spectroscopy.

The position will start January 1st 2018 at the earliest. Applications are to be filed by October 31st at the latest.

The successful candidate will be part of the NMR and Structure Analysis group at UGent, and use the NMR facilities part of the NMR Expertise Centre and consisting of Bruker 300, 400, 500(x2) and 700 MHz(equipped with Prodigy) . At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in the domain of antimicrobial peptides, more particularly their isolation, purification, structure elucidation, spatial structure determination in solution with NMR and structure-function studies. The position also includes teaching of practicals and exercises in the field of NMR spectroscopy, as well as organisational duties, within the department.

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in the domain of antimicrobial peptides, more particularly their isolation, purification, structure elucidation, spatial structure determination in solution with NMR and structure-function studies .
  • You will assist in teaching activities at the Bachelor’s and/or Master’s level, in particular the coordination and guidance of advanced practicals and exercise sessions in structure analysis, and internships at bachelor and master level.
  • You will mentor Master’s students in their exercises, work placement and Master’s dissertation.
  • You will mentor doctoral students.
  • You will assist in securing research funding.
  • You will contribute to the scientific service provided by the NMR expertise Center UGent.


  • You hold a doctoral degree (in Sciences: Chemistry) or a subject considered relevant by the selection committee.The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
  • You have already conducted research within the field of structure, function and mechanism of activity of natural products, specifically those associated with ‘middle space molecules’.
  • You have a broad and proven experience in the use of NMR spectroscopy for molecular structure elucidation and spatial structure determination.
  • Knowledge of and experience with molecular modelling is recommended.
  • Knowledge of and experience with other biophysical methods is recommended.
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher in your doctorate.
  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or Advanced Master’s programs.
  • You have relevant scientific publications in international and national peer-reviewed academic journals that are widely disseminated and make use of peer review.
  • Communications or presentations at scientific conferences are recommended.
  • You have excellent didactic and communication skills.
  • You have an excellent command of spoken and written English.


  • We offer you a three-year appointment, which may be renewed once for three years at the most. A positive evaluation of the previous term will be necessary. The term of renewal begins immediately after the first term has expired. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a post-doctoral assistant at a university within the Flemish Community, you cannot apply for this position.
  • Your appointment will start on 1 January 2018 at the earliest.
