    The Department of Science Teaching at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) will award this academic year a prize of $5,000 to an outstanding Ph.D. student whose research is in science or science education, who is in transition to start postdoctoral training in science education abroad. A special committee of WIS scientists will review the nominations and select the winner. The call is open to the nomination of candidates from all the universities in Israel.

  • Travel Grants Commemorating Victims of the October 7 Hamas Terror Attacks

    Date: 25 January, 2024 Hour: 12:30

    There were many applicant for the travel grants commemorating Dr. Marcel Frailich Kaplun and Dr. Hagit Refaeli Mishkin. Ten grants (5 by the Technion and 5 by the Weizmann Institute) were awarded to students from China, Germany, India, Israel, South Africa, Uganda, and the United States. A meeting with the awardees will be held on March 19 at NARST, in Denver.

    A consortium of two Israeli Universities – the Technion and the Weizmann Institute of Science – is offering up to 8 scholarships to support the attendance of graduate students at the NARST 2024 Annual Conference. These scholarships have been established to commemorate two Israeli science educators and members of NARST who were murdered by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023 – Dr. Marcel Frailich Kaplun and Dr. Hagit Refaeli Mishkin.

    The Weizmann Institute of Science family, the Department of Science Teaching and the Science and Technology in Junior High School group mourn the death of Dr. Marcel Frailich Kaploon, who was murdered in the terror attack on Kibbutz Beeri.
    Marcel, a PhD graduate of the department, was a central pillar in the Science and Technology in Junior High School group - developing learning and teaching materials and actively participating in the professional development of teachers.
    We send our sincere condolences to her family in this difficult time and join them in their grief.

  • Orly Kaplan prize for excellence in Ph.D. studies

    Congratulations to Rachel Zaks for winning the 2024 Orly Kaplan prize for excellence in Ph.D. studies. The prize was granted for the study “Creating opportunities for problem solving in mathematics classes as a teaching practice related to anticipating students' solutions”, conducted under the mentorship of Prof. Boris Koichu.

    1. Tanya Nazaretsky, who recently completed her doctoral studies under the supervision of Giora Alexandron at the Weizmann Institute of Science, and recently started a postdoc in Tanja Käser's lab at EPFL, Switzerland.
    2. Rotem Israel-Fishelson, who recently completed her doctoral studies under the supervision of Arnon Hershkowitz at Tel Aviv University, and recently started a postdoc in David Weintrop's laboratory at the University of Maryland, USA.

    Congratulations and best wishes for continued success in their academic endeavors to both the award winners and the other excellent candidates who submitted an application.
