Brief

Starting next year, a reform of the laboratory matriculation is planned that is intended to promote greater student agency in the instructional laboratory, and a greater emphasis on experimental research practices.
To prepare for the change, the Physics Education Research group is operating professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on lab instruction: in 2023-4, and 2024-5, a pilot PLC was carried out, and starting in the 2025-6 academic year, a PLC for leaders of regional PLCs in a national network focused on an alternative curriculum in the instructional laboratory.
In these PLCs, teachers experience as learners novel laboratory manuals titled “deliberation labs” that are tailored to the goals of the reform, try them out in their classrooms, share and reflect with peers on challenges encountered and means to cope with them.

Research

Adi Noga, PhD student, studies teachers’ PD with respect to the reform. She employs the Ecological Systems Theory to study questions regarding the roles of different environments in which teachers operate in the development of teachers’ pedagogical judgment.

Our thanks to the Ministry of Education for their support of the project.
