Mr. Dan Mayer

Aug 13, 1939 — May 03, 2020

Dan Mayer, a dear and devoted friend of the Weizmann Institute of Science, passed away on May 3, at the age of 80.

Dan Mayer was an active and engaged member of the French-speaking community of Weizmann Institute supporters for many years. Together with his father, Hermann Mayer z”l, he was actively engaged in the activities of Weizmann France, assisting with organizing events and expanding the scope of activities of the Committee. Like his father before him, Dan became a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute (later the International Board) in 1985. On the same year, he was elected to the Executive Council – later the Executive Board – and served in this important capacity until 2009. He was elected as a Life Member of the International Board in November 2018.

Hermann and Dan Mayer were also major benefactors of the Weizmann Institute, who provided the necessary funds needed to establish two critical facilities on campus, each in its own way. The Hermann and Dan Mayer Building for Semiconductor Science, established in 1994, helped the sub-micron research cluster on campus to grow into to a world-class research community in nano-scale science. The Hermann Mayer Campus Guesthouse, on the other hand, has been serving as the main hub for scientist and VIP short-term housing on campus, in a familiar and friendly atmosphere. In memory of his father, Dan Mayer established the Hermann Mayer Professorial Chair, the current incumbent of which is Prof. David Tannor of the Department of Chemical and Biological Physics.

For his lifelong dedication and contribution to the Weizmann Institute of Science, Dan Mayer received the degree of PhD honoris causa in 1991.

On behalf of the entire Weizmann Institute community, we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Dan’s children, André and Deborah, and to the rest of the family.
