Sir David Sieff

Mar 22, 1939 — May 27, 2019

Sir David Sieff passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019; He was 80.

Sir David Sieff was born in 1939, the son of Lord Sieff of Brimpton and great-grandson of Michael Marks. He joined Marks & Spencer in 1957, and was its Executive Director from 1972 to 1997. Among his other roles, he was Chairman of FIBI (UK) (1994-2004) and UKBetting plc. (2001-2004), Chairman of the British Retail Consortium (1998-2002), and Chair of the European Retail Round Table (1999-2002).

Sir David carried on his family’s tradition of philanthropy and charity, and was active for many years in various organizations. He was a Trustee of the Mentor Foundation (for the prevention of drug abuse amongst the young), and the Honorary President of British ORT. He was the first Chairman of the National Lottery Charities Board and a member of the National Board for Crime Prevention (1993 to 1995).

His deep connections with the Weizmann Institute were a direct continuation of the long heritage of the Sieff family, who helped establish the Daniel Sieff Institute in 1934. He was first elected to the Board of Governors in 1978, and served as its Deputy Chair from 1986 to 1995. He was also a longtime lay leader of Weizmann UK, and was – until his passing – Life President of Weizmann UK, and Life Member of the International Board of the Weizmann Institute. For his immense contribution to the Weizmann Institute, he was awarded a PhD honoris causa in 1993.

Sir David’s kind heart, wisdom, and dedication to the State of Israel and to the Weizmann Institute leaves a significant legacy for future generations. The Institute has been honored by this association with him, and he will be sorely missed.

On behalf of the entire Weizmann Institute family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Lady Jeni, his sons Simon and Jonathan, his sisters the Hon. Amanda Sieff and the Hon. Dr. Daniela Sieff, and the entire extended family.
