Mr. Derrick Kleeman

Oct 11, 1919 — Sep 28, 2017

Our dear friend Derrick Kleeman passed away on Thursday, September 28, at the age of 98.

Derrick had a distinguished and successful business career as Chairman of O&M Kleemann Limited, director of a leading merchant bank, and founder of the industrial group Kleeman Industrial Holdings Ltd. However, his devotion to Israeli causes was always a top priority. He served as Chairman of the U.K. Joint Palestine Appeal (later the Joint Israel Appeal), and he played a key role in the first Israel Economic Conference, held in Jerusalem on the initiative of then Prime Minister Levi Eshkol.

First elected to the Institute Board in 1971, Derrick served in a variety of posts, including Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1983 to 1992, member of the Executive Committee and the Executive Council, and member of the Nominating and Honors committees. In addition, Derrick served as Chairman of the Weizmann Institute Foundation (today known as Weizmann–UK) and Chairman of the European Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science. In 1979, the Weizmann Institute awarded Derrick a PhD honoris causa for his service and leadership, and in 2007 the International Board elected Derrick as Life Member.

Derrick and his wife, Hella, created the Hella and Derrick Kleeman Professorial Chair of Biochemistry, funded the construction of the Schmidt Auditorium, and established an endowment fund for the purchase of vital scientific equipment.

Derrick’s kind heart, wisdom, and dedication to Israel and the Weizmann Institute form the basis of a strong legacy for future generations. The Institute has been honored by this association with Derrick, and he will be sorely missed.

On behalf of the members of the International Board and the entire Weizmann Institute family, we extend to Hella, their children, Peter and Judy, and the entire family our condolences for their loss.
