Welcome to the inaugural TBSI-Weizmann joint meeting

Recent years have seen great advances in understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which cells sense pathogen components and respond to them, and of the mechanisms by which cell-derived mediators and intracellular mechanisms regulate cell growth, differentiation and survival, and immune response. Besides their contribution to elucidation of complicated biological processes, these advances also paved new ways for therapy of chronic inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases and cancer.

The first joint yearly conference of the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute and the Weizmann Institute of Science will present cutting edge progress in the study of mechanisms of inflammation and cancer in the two institutes. Keynotes will be delivered by James Watson, the 1962 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine, for discovering the double helix structure; Aaron Ciechanover, the 2004 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation; Bruce Beutler, the 2011 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine, for discoveries about the activation of innate immunity; Ada Yonath, the 2009 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, for her studies on the structure and function of the ribosome; biologist Jules Hoffmann, the 2011 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine, for discoveries about the activation of innate immunity and Marc Feldmann, the 2003 winner of the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research and 2014 winner of the Gairdner Prize, for the discovery of anti-TNF therapy for rheumatoid arthritis.

The symposium will conclude with a special session on the commercialization of breakthroughs in biomedicine research in Ireland and Israel.

To accommodate for the very large number of scientists that registered for the symposium we had to opt for a larger venue. The meeting will be held in the Chartered Accountants House, 47-49 Pearse Street, Dublin (www.charteredaccountantshouse.ie/en/About-Venue/Dublin/) which is 3 minutes  away from TBSI.

We shall supply all participants before the meeting with badges bearing their names and with the meeting’s program.

All participants from Trinity College Dublin and Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute are requested to obtain the badge and program BEFORE the meeting from Ms. Siobhán McGurk (siobhan.mcgurk@tcd.ie or 896 4427) on Thursday 24th or Friday 25th July. (Please bring your college ID).

All other participants are requested to arrive WITH PHOTO ID to the meeting at the registration hours (from 14:00 onwards on July 27 and from 08:00 AM on July 28 and 29) in order to obtain their badge and meeting’s bag.

Only attendants with the meeting’s badges will be allowed in.

Tea, coffee and lunch, can be bought in the cafe of the venue or in many places nearby.
