Applying for Institute housing involves a few key steps and considerations. Below you will find practical information on eligibility, housing terms, extensions, and available support, to help you understand the process and plan your stay.
- How to Apply
-
Housing application procedures vary by status.
-
For international MSc and PhD students, as well as Visiting Students, housing requests are submitted automatically as part of admission to the Weizmann School of Science.
-
For Visiting Scientists, Postdoctoral Fellows, Senior Interns, Research Assistants, and Lab Visitors, housing requests are submitted through the hosting department via the Visiting Scientist system. Please make sure to stay in touch with your host or department administrator to verify that a reservation has been submitted. Submitting your request in advance will increase your chances of securing housing for the requested dates.
Housing is reserved only after receipt of all required internal approvals and confirmed solely through written notification sent by the Housing & Community Branch coordinators.
Please note: Entry into Institute housing is conditional upon holding an active status at the Institute, a valid visa, and valid health insurance.
-
- Housing Allocation
-
Housing allocations are managed by the Institute and are subject to availability. Apartments are assigned based on eligibility category, application timing, and current housing inventory. Preferences cannot always be guaranteed.
- Housing Eligibility
-
Institute housing is available to eligible members of the Institute community for a limited period, based on their academic or employment status.
The purpose of the housing program is to support new arrivals from abroad during their initial transition to Israel, allowing time to settle in and arrange long-term accommodation.
Housing eligibility begins upon arrival in Israel and the start of the official status at the Institute. Please note that housing allocation is subject to availability.

- Term of Stay

Housing is offered for a defined eligibility period based on academic or visit status, as detailed in the criteria below. For students and postdoctoral fellows, the maximum housing period is determined by status. For visiting scientists, housing may be approved for the duration of the visit.
Eligibility Criteria
- The eligibility period begins on the date of arrival in Israel. Unused eligibility cannot be deferred or exercised later.
- Housing entry may take place at any point during the year, in accordance with the approved start date of studies or employment and subject to a minimum of one month’s advance notice.
- For MSc students, housing entry dates are determined annually in line with the academic calendar. For the 2026–2027 academic year, the earliest move-in date is 08 October 2026.
- Returning Israeli citizens who were born abroad or who moved abroad before the age of 15 may reside in Institute housing for a maximum period of 12 months. - Rent Rates
-
Housing rates are determined based on housing type and the resident’s academic and familial status.
Rates are reviewed and updated annually, usually in January, by the Rent Committee.
The rates applicable to all statuses classified as employees are reviewed and updated annually by the Finance Division, with the President’s approval.
Note that due to tax regulations, rent for employees, including International Senior Interns, International Research Assistants, and Visiting Scientists (with salary) may differ from other housing rates. The applicable rate appears under "Rent Details" for each apartment type.

-
Cancellations are free of charge if made up to two business days prior to arrival. Cancellations made after this period will incur a fee, as determined from time to time. The applicable fee will be specified in the housing confirmation email.

Housing requests outside standard eligibility criteria, for students and postdoctoral fellows, including housing extensions, may be reviewed by the Housing Requests Committee in accordance with Institute guidelines.
Applications to the committee are submitted using the designated application form. The committee convenes quarterly, during the first week of September, December, March, and June. The application form opens for submission as of the 1st of the month preceding each committee meeting. For example, for the September committee meeting, the application form opens on July 1st.
The next committee will convene on December 13, 2026. Applications must be submitted by 28.11.2026.
Approved requests are assigned in accordance with institutional considerations. The Institute does not guarantee a specific housing location, room type, or continuity of housing over time.
