The Anonymous FTP Server at Weizmann

One of the problems Weizmann users often face is the difficulty in exchanging files with other users, both at Weizmann and anywhere else in the world. In order to allow easy transfer of files between individuals, WICC has set up an anonymous FTP server which allows anyone, anywhere, to connect to it and upload or download files. The anonymous FTP server at the Institute is called ftp-dmz.

Weizmann users with a valid Unix account who wish to upload files to the FTP server should connect to the machine via an appropriate FTP client, using their WICC Unix userid and password. After connecting, you must change directory (cd command) to the directory /pub/userid, where you can upload your files. Please note that files placed here will not remain on the server indefinitely. Files are erased approximately every three months.

Weizmann users without a valid Unix account, or non-Weizmann users, can connect to Weizmann's anonymous FTP server with a user name of anonymous and any valid email address as a password. The anonymous user can then change directories to /pub/userid in order to download public files.

To upload a file to the server, the anonymous user must change directories to /incoming. Files placed here will remain on the server for one month only. There are restrictions on the use of this directory: The anonymous user

No user can get a listing of files in the /incoming directory. To download files from /incoming, the user must know the exact name of the file.
