Extreme weather events

Extreme weather has tremendous environmental and societal impact. We study the dynamical mechanisms which control a wide range of extreme events: from heavy precipitation, floods  and strong winds, to extreme temperatures, thunderstorms, wild fires.

We employ complementary Eulerian and Lagrangian diagnostic tools both for detailed case studies and for longer-term climatological analyses , to understand the processes which govern the extremes.

Currently we focus on the atmospheric moisture pathways from intense ocean evaporation events to heavy precipitation downstream, and the emergence of deep convection in frontal systems.
