Setting your browser to open with the Weizmann home page

Setting the homepage of your browser depends on which browser you are using:

Internet Explorer, Netscape 8, Mozilla Firefox (PC):
Pull down on the Tools menu, choose Internet Options, and click on the General icon. In the section labeled Home page, enter http://www.weizmann.ac.il/ in the Address box. Click on OK.

Firefox (Unix, Mac), Safari:
On Unix, pull down on the Edit menu. On a Mac, pull down on the Safari menu in Safari or on the Firefox menu in Firefox. Choose Prefernces, and click on the General icon. In the section labeled Home page, enter http://www.weizmann.ac.il/ in the Address box. Click on OK.

Netscape 7 / Mozilla:
On a PC or on Unix, pull down on the Edit menu. On a Mac, pull down on the Netscape menu in Netscape or on the Mozilla menu in Mozilla. Then, choose Preferences and click on Navigator. In the section that says Display on Navigator Startup, click on Home Page. In the section marked Home page, enter http://www.weizmann.ac.il/ in the space given. Click on OK.

Netscape 4:
Pull down on the Edit menu, choose Preferences, and click on Navigator. In the section that says Browser starts with, click on Home Page. In the section marked Home page, enter http://www.weizmann.ac.il/ in the space given. Click on OK.

How do I change the default web browser on a Mac?

Go to the Apple Menu and choose Control Panels. If you are working in Mac OSX choose System Preferences. From there, choose Internet and click the Web tab. Find the section on the Default browser. Choose the browser you want and close the window.

How do I change the default web browser on a PC?

Removing your Password from Internet Explorer's Memory

In Internet Explorer:
  • Pull down on the Tools menu and choose Internet Options.
  • Click on the Content tab.
  • In the section on Personal Information, click on AutoComplete and click on Clear Passwords.
  • Reading Cyrillic Documents in your Browser

    In order to read Cyrillic documents you must use a Cyrillic font. Pull down on the View menu. Depending on your browser, choose Encoding, Character Encoding, Character Coding or Text Encoding and then choose a Cyrillic encoding.     Customizing your personal Toolbar

    In almost all browsers, you can add links to your personal toolbar by simply dragging the icon that is to the left of the URL to your personal toolbar. Right clicking on the bookmark in your personal toolbar, will open up a menu that allows you to manage the bookmark.

    Forcing Browser to save a file or image

    In order save a file, position the mouse above the text pointing to the link and click on the right button. A menu pops up and offers you the option to Save Link as... or Save Target as....
    If you want to save an image, right click on the image and choose Save Image as... or Save Picture as....

    Setting the Proxy on Mac OS X

    Pull down the Apple menu and go to System Preferences.
    Click on the Network icon.
    In most cases, Built-in ethernet should be selected. If you are using cable or ADSL, click on VPN(PPTP).
    Click on Configure and then click on the Proxies tab.

    For Configure Proxies, choose Using a PAC file.
    For the URL, put in http://www.weizmann.ac.il/CC/normal.pac.

    Configuring Lynx (Version 2.3 or higher) to use a Proxy Server

    To use the proxy server with Lynx for Unix, type the following at your c-shell prompt, or put it in your .cshrc to make the settings permanent:

    If you use the standard proxy, enter the following line:
      setenv http_proxy http://wwwproxy.weizmann.ac.il:8080/

    If you are working on a Weizmann machine, enter the following line: (Do not enter this line if you are working on a machine that is not a Weizmann machine or if you are working in wireless mode.)
      setenv no_proxy weizmann.ac.il

    Reading News in Netscape Navigator

    Versions of Netscape Navigator higher than Netscape 4 do not have a built-in newsreader. Instead, you can download Netscape Communicator directly from the Netscape website. Read these instructions for how to do this. As the Weizmann Institute does not have its own news server, we recommend that you use news.huji.ac.il, which is Hebrew University's news server as your News Server.

    Reading News in Internet Explorer

    In essence, as Internet Explorer is not a mail program, you read your news via the mail program you use. If you use Outlook Express, go to Tools, Accounts, and News. Enter the information as requested. As the Weizmann Institute does not have its own news server, we recommend that you use news.huji.ac.il, which is Hebrew University's news server.

    Reading News in Netscape 4

    Open the Edit menu, click on Preferences, and then on Mail & Newsgroups. Under Mail & Newsgroups, click on Newsgroups Servers and click on Add. A panel will open where you can enter the server name. Enter news.huji.ac.il. As the Weizmann Institute does not have its own news server, we recommend that you use news.huji.ac.il, which is Hebrew University's news server.

    In order to read news, pull down on the Communicator menu and choose Newsgroups. You may also click on the middle icon (third from left) in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

    Enabling/disabling javascript in Netscape 4 or 6

    Pull down the Edit menu, choose Preferences, and click Advanced.
    Make sure that Enable Javascript and Enable Style Sheets are checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.

    Click OK

    Enabling/disabling javascript in Netscape 7 or Mozilla (Unix)

    Pull down the Edit menu and choose Preferences, Under Advanced, click on Scripts & Plugins
    In the section Enable Javascript for make sure Navigator is checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.
    Click OK

    Enabling/disabling javascript in Internet Explorer on a PC

    Pull down the Tools menu and choose Internet Options
    Click on the Security tab
    Click on Internet

  • Click on Custom Level and scroll down to the section on Scripting
  • Make sure that Active Scripting is enabled or disabled (depending on what you want)
  • Click on OK
    Click on Local Intranet and repeat the above 3 steps.

  • Enabling/disabling javascript in Firefox on Unix

    Pull down the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Click on the Web Features icon. Make sure that Enable Javascriptis checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.

    Pull down the Toolsmenu and choose Options. Click on the Web Features icon. Make sure that Enable Javascriptis checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.

    Enabling/disabling javascript in Netscape 8

    Pull down the Toolsmenu and choose Options. Click on the Site Controls icon. In the section on Web Features, make sure that Enable Javascriptis checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.

    Enabling/disabling javascript in Internet Explorer on a Mac

    Pull down the Edit menu, choose Preferences. Click on Web Content (from the left side of the dialogue box). Find Active Content on the right side of the dialogue box and make sure that Enable Scripting is checked if you want javascript enabled or not checked if you want javascript disabled.

    What to do when you have trouble connecting to sites

    1. The most likely reason for this type of problem is that your proxy is not set correctly. Refer to our instructions for configuring your proxy. (in Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, , in Internet Explorer)

      If this doesn't help, and you're working on a PC, try one of the following options:

    2. Delete your temporary files as follows:
      In Internet Explorer:
      Open Tools --> Internet Options --> Temporary Internet Files --> Delete Files --> Delete all offline content --> OK
    3. Delete your cookies as follows:
      In IE 5.5:
      Open Tools --> Internet Options --> Temporary Internet Files --> Delete Cookies

      If you are using IE 5.0 leave the browser, and:
      Open My Computer --> C:\Documents and Settings --> Administrator Cookies --> Edit --> Select all --> Delete

    4. Check your Internet settings:
      In Internet Explorer:
      Open Tools --> Internet Options --> Temporary Internet Files --> Settings --> Temporary Internet Files Folder --> 10 MB
    5. Check your Security settings:
      In Internet Explorer:
      Open Tools --> Internet Options --> Security --> Set All web content zone to Default Level
