The Daniel Sieff Building

Sieff Building

The Sieff Building is unique in that Israel's biotechnology had its start in this, the oldest building of today's Weizmann Institute of Science, then known as the Daniel Sieff Research Institute.

The 2-story building was erected through the generosity of Lord and Lady Sieff of Brimpton, England and the Marks and Sacher families, in memory of Daniel Sieff. Research in the realm of organic chemistry has continued in this building since 1934. Its distinguished history began with Dr. Chaim Weizmann, a prominent scientist who was later to become Israel's first president.

Since those early days, the Weizmann Institute has grown tremendously, but the Sieff Building, in its very center, still has pride of place. In 1994, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Weizmann Institute and the 120th anniversary of Chaim Weizmann's birth, his laboratory and adjacent study were restored to their original state, and include some of the very equipment used by him.
