Barred by anti-Jewish quotas from attending college in his native Czarist Russian Empire,
Weizmann studied chemistry first in Darmstadt
and then at the Imperial Technical College in
Berlin (presently the Technical University of Berlin).
He obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry, magna cum laude,
from the University
of Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1899. After a stint as an outside lecturer
(Privatdozent) at the
University of Geneva, he accepted a faculty position at the University of
Manchester in 1904, first as the assistant of Prof. Perkin, then
as the head of a newly created Biological Chemistry department.
