Advancing Alzheimer’s Research
Rebecca Boukhris, Trustee of the Adelis Foundation, presented a major gift on behalf of the foundation to support the research Prof. Michal Schwartz, of the Department of Neurobiology. Prof. Schwartz discussed the highlights of her research, which focuses Alzheimer’s disease. One of her key contributions to the field is the concept of “protective immunity”, that the immune system plays a central role in maintaining brain health and combating neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s. Specifically, she and her research team identified a specific gateway within the brain’s blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier that permits the entry of immune cells into the brain when they are needed for repair following acute injury or neurodegenerative damage. She suggests that this gateway is critical for life-long brain maintenance, and thinks that it may be the missing link in brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
