Fellowship Opportunities for Postdoctoral Fellows at the Weizmann Institute of Science

The Azrieli Foundation has launched its Call for Applications for the International Postdoctoral Fellowship for research at Israeli universities in STEM for the 2023–24 academic year.

When to apply

What kind of candidates are they looking for
Ideal candidates will have an excellent academic track record and the potential to perform groundbreaking research, alongside an intellectual curiosity that transcends their field of study. They will possess a character that facilitates teamwork, scientific and societal leadership, with traits such as empathy, humility and integrity, alongside communication capabilities.

Who can apply
The Fellowship is open to candidates who have received their PhD degrees no earlier than November 1, 2019, in all countries except Israel. PhD candidates may apply if they complete their dissertation defence successfully no later than June 1, 2023. All nationalities may apply, except for Israeli citizens and residents. Candidates who commenced a postdoctoral or an academic position in Israel prior to September 1, 2022, may not apply.

What is required in order to apply
Requirements are detailed in the Guidelines on the Azrieli Foundation website. Please note that candidates are required to have an academic sponsor who is a faculty member at an eligible Israeli academic institution. It is strongly recommended that you seek an academic sponsor as soon as possible.

How much is the Fellowship
The value of the Fellowship is approximately € 53,000 (ILS 188,000) per year, including funds reserved for research and travel.

When does the Fellowship begin
The official starting date of the Fellowship is October 2023, which is the beginning of the Israeli academic year 2023-24. However, candidates are permitted to start their Fellowship as early as June 2023, and no later than March 2024.

How long does the fellowship last
The Fellowship is offered for two years. Renewal for a third year will be considered favorably based on a competitive evaluation process.

How many fellowships are offered in STEM
Up to 18 fellowships in STEM fields.

When will decisions be announced?
Award notifications will be made by February 2023.

The Council for Higher Education in Israel and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities have announced a new excellence fellowship program for outstanding international postdoctoral researchers, In order to attract top young recent PhD graduates to take on a postdoctoral position with leading scientists and scholars in Israel on cutting-edge research in all fields of science.
 
Fellowship

NIS 160,000 per annum (for up to two years).

Arrival

The training period at the WIS may start between June 2021 and no later than March 1, 2022. Please note that funding will start on October 1, 2021.
 
Matching

The hosting research group will be responsible to pay 50% of the fellowship mentioned above.
 
Eligibility

• Israeli citizens may not apply.
• Candidates are required to have been accepted to a postdoc position under the supervision of a faculty member prior to the application deadline.

The Deans of the Faculties of the Weizmann Institute offer a limited number of fellowships to postdoctoral fellows. The level of support is either 50% or 100% of the regular fellowship and can continue for up to two years. In case the level of support is 50% - the remaining part is paid by the hosts funds.

• A candidate who has already submitted his/her online application form to the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the Institute.
• Fellows who have already started a postdoc at WIS may also apply, if they are still within the first two years of training

Restrictions

• Postdoctoral fellows whose postdoctoral training is in continuation of their PhD studies in the same research group at WIS may NOT be nominated.
• In Chemistry and in Life Sciences Faculties the number of nominees per research group is limited to ONE.
• In Life Sciences, preference will be given to research groups who currently do not host a postdoctoral fellow funded in part by a Dean’s Fellowship.

Senior Postdoctoral Fellows

The senior postdoctoral fellowship is an excellence-based career development program to prepare outstanding fellows for independent research leader positions. Full details on this program are available on the FGS website.

Postdoctoral fellows currently at the Weizmann Institute may apply to transfer to senior postdoctoral fellowship status after 2-3 years of regular postdoctoral training.

The senior postdoctoral fellowship period is restricted to three years at the most, and the entire postdoctoral training period at Weizmann (regular + senior postdoc periods) is limited to five years. Hence please note that fellows that transfer to senior postdoctoral fellow status after more than two years of regular postdoctoral training at Weizmann may stay as senior postdoctoral fellows until the five-year overall training limit is reached, and not longer. The training period for fellows that do not apply for senior postdoc status is limited to four years at the most.

Please note:

• Candidates who were not successful in the previous round may re-apply only once, and only after discussing their application with the Chair of the postdoctoral training program. Please consider the appropriate deadline for re-application very carefully, since candidates whose application are not approve for second time will not be allowed to re-apply in future deadlines.
• FGS Ph.D. graduates may apply for Senior postdoctoral training only if they have completed at least two years of postdoctoral training at another academic institution

Applications must include:

• Endorsement by the postdoctoral mentor and confirmation that funding will be available to cover the increased fellowship and travel allowance.
• An updated short curriculum vitae and list of main publications (2 pages maximum).
• A research plan of 2-3 pages, including details of publications in preparation or in submission.
• A career development plan (1 page) describing the candidate’s career plans beyond the senior postdoc training period and how he/she intends to achieve these goals. Please note that the career development plan is not an extra page to describe the candidate's science, rather it should describe the practical steps the candidate intends to take towards an independent career in science.
• Up to four letters of recommendation from senior academics who can attest to the candidate’s potential to advance to an independent research leader position. At least two letters must be from individual who had not worked directly with the candidate, preferably from other institutions (not the host institution for PhD or postdoc). 
• Applicants who were not successful in a previous round and were given permission to re-apply should attach a one page document detailing the changes in the application.

The applications will be reviewed by a committee headed by the Chair of the Postdoctoral Training Program. The review process may include a personal interview.

CALL for Nominations: The Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program for Postdoctoral Fellowship 2023-2024

The Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars Program attracts high-achieving postdoctoral researchers from premier universities in the United States and Canada to do research at one of the Israeli universities. Once they complete their research, Zuckerman postdocs are expected to accept faculty positions at top North American universities, weaving a network of academic collaboration and goodwill that will greatly benefit U.S.-Israeli scientific cooperation. In addition, Zuckerman scholars enjoy programming and activities specially organized for them by the host universities, such as sightseeing tours, educational experiences, and social programs. These activities are aimed at strengthening the scholars’ knowledge of and affiliation with Israel, and at cultivating an esprit de corps within the program.

Duration and Funding

Postdoc at an Israeli University Track:

• Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholarships are for up to two years.
• Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars receive a scholarship of $63,000 per academic year for up to two years. Of this amount, $60,000 is provided by the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program ($8,400 towards relocation reimbursement for the first year, $8,400 for research and travel to professional conferences for the second year plus $51,600 for living expenses [$4,300 per month]). An additional $3,000 in research funds will be provided to all Zuckerman Scholars by their supervisors at their hosting universities.
• If circumstances allow, Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholarships may be renewed on a competitive basis for an additional one or two years.

Joint US-Israel Postdoc Track:

• Joint Postdoctoral scholars receive a scholarship of $63,000 per academic year for up to two years. Of this amount, $60,000 is provided by the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program: $51,600 for living expenses [$4,300 per month] plus $8,400 towards relocation reimbursement, provided they will stay in Israel for a minimum of one year. 
• An additional $3,000 in research funds is directed to scholars through their supervisors at their Israeli universities.
• Another $8,000 is to be provided for research and travel to professional conferences directly by the scholar US or Canadian university. Scholars who are interested in this track, should apply to their US or Canadian university to receive this stipend. The US or Canadian university may provide other supplemental funding for living expenses during their stay in the US or Canada.
• Candidates applying for a Joint US-Israel Postdoc track must show a letter of support from their US or Canadian university that confirms an annual support of $8,000

Eligibility

Postdoc at an Israeli University Track:

• Candidates must be citizens of the United States or Canada, or have a documented status that allows them to study and work in the US.
• For the 2023-2024 academic year, international candidates who completed a PhD at a US or a Canadian university, and who plan to return to the United States or Canada to compete for an academic position may also apply
• Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree from a premier university, or if still studying for a Ph.D., must submit their Ph.D. thesis before October 1, 2023.
• Postdoctoral candidates must obtain consent from a potential hosting supervisor at the Israeli university to which they are applying.

Joint US-Israel Postdoc Track:

• Joint postdoctoral candidates must be citizens of the United States or Canada or have a documented status that allows them to study and work in the US.
• Candidates must hold a PhD degree from a leading university, or if still studying for a PhD, must submit their PhD thesis before October 1, 2023.
• Joint postdoctoral candidates must obtain consent from potential hosting supervisors at both the Israeli university and the American or Canadian university to which they are applying.

Required Documents

• Curriculum vitae, including a paragraph on demonstrated leadership qualities.
• List of at least three publications, noting the impact factor of the journals in which the papers were published.
• Short letter of intent declaring the candidate’s plans to return to the United States or Canada and compete for a university position there.
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages).
• Letter of consent from a potential supervisor at the Israeli university the candidate is applying to.
• Three letters of recommendation, including a letter from the candidate’s Ph.D. supervisor. If possible, one letter should be from a university other than the one where the candidate’s Ph.D. was granted.
• Personal statement detailing the candidate’s future career plans.
• A simplified 200-word description of intended research.

Zuckerman Scholars are required to participate in sponsored events and activities during the academic year. These events include but are not limited to:

• a day-long academic event at each participating university campus
• visits to various departments, research programs, and research facilities, including opportunities to meet students and faculty at other universities
• a Zuckerman Institute scientific seminar with media coverage that will be open to the public, where selected postdoctoral scholars from the participating universities in the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program will present their research
• In addition, scholars will be invited to social activities and sightseeing trips. They will be exposed to Israeli culture, meet with various sectors and ethnic groups, and visit science parks and high-tech incubators in Israel.

 
Publications

Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars must identify themselves as members of the Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars Program in all academic and scientific papers, articles, publications, presentations, etc.

The Feinberg Graduate School of the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) is pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowships program, combining research in a Weizmann Institute laboratory with a leading laboratory in another country. The program is designed to encourage progress towards an academic career, by offering opportunities for international research experience to excellent female PhD graduates who are unable to relocate for a conventional postdoc abroad. The hosting supervisors are expected to provide mentorship in projects that are initiated by the candidates, and aimed at their development as independent scientists.

The program will allow maximal flexibility in the division of the candidate’s time between the two host laboratories, and successful fellows will be free to modify their research plans and time commitments to each of the host laboratories according to the evolving needs of the project. Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis, and academic excellence will be the overriding consideration in choice of awardees.

• Ph.D. graduates from all Israeli universities with excellent academic and research track records.
• WIS Ph.D. graduates who wish to conduct postdoctoral training at WIS may apply to this program only after prior approval by the program committee. Please contact the chair of the WIS postdoctoral program for details.
• Applicants must be within 2 years of Ph.D. approval date.
• WIS Ph.D. graduates who wish to conduct postdoctoral training with their Ph.D. advisor MAY NOT apply to this program.
• The candidate should have already submitted her online application to the Postdoctoral  Program.

Funding and duration

The program will provide a full postdoctoral fellowship for two years, with an option to extend for an additional two years if warranted. In addition, $ 10,000 per year will be provided for travel, accommodation and per diem costs of the fellow related to the collaboration with the overseas laboratory.

Funding may be carried over from one year to the next if the budget is not fully utilized, as long as the fellow does not carry over more than $ 10,000 in any given year. Unused funds that cannot be carried over will be returned to the overall program budget, for the future benefit of other fellows.

• Research plan- please submit a research plan under the co-mentorship of two postdoctoral advisors, one from the Weizmann Institute and one from a leading laboratory in another country. • Supporting letters from the two co-mentors.
• A letter of support from the PhD advisor.

The Sergio Lombroso Postdoctoral Fellowship Fund was established in memory of the late lawyer Sergio Lombroso, of Verona, Italy, whose generosity enables the Weizmann Institute to provide these funds in support of cancer research.

This program provides a one-year fellowship with the possibility of an extension for a second year. Please note that acceptance to the program depends on approval by the Feinberg Graduate School; acceptance by a host research lab at Weizmann Institute; and academic achievements.

Requirements

The fellowship is awarded to exceptionally qualified Italian candidates. Applicants for this program must meet the following requirements:

• Italian citizenship.
• Have a Ph.D. or MD degree from an accredited institution of higher learning or confirmation from such an institution of fulfilling the requirements of a doctorate, including submission of a thesis.
• Intend to pursue cancer research.
• Found a WIS Head of Research Group who is willing to host them for their postdoctoral training.
• Candidates already eligible for a Ph.D. degree must have obtained their degree no more than 4 years prior to the date of application for this fellowship.

Each year, the Swiss Association of Friends of the Weizmann Institute of Science supports a number of postdoctoral fellows from Switzerland, enabling them to come to the Institute. As a candidate for this fellowship, you may apply for acceptance in any field of research that is pursued at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The program provides an annual fellowship paid through the Weizmann institute of Science, and covers some of the participant’s relocation expenses. This fellowship replaces the regular WIS fellowship.

Minimum Requirements

All candidates for this fellowship must:

• Hold Swiss citizenship or have Swiss residency.
• Meet the academic requirements of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
• Have a PhD degree.
• In addition, candidates should come from a Swiss academic institution, and be able to return to an academic center in Switzerland after their research stay at the Institute.

The Weizmann-IDOR Pioneer Science Fellowships Program was established by the Pioneer Science initiative and the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR) - a non-profit institution focused on science, education, and innovation in healthcare - with the aim of supporting talented Brazilian postdoctoral fellows at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

This program provides a three-year fellowship. Please note that acceptance to the program depends on approval by the Feinberg Graduate School; acceptance by a host research lab at Weizmann Institute; and academic achievements.

Requirements

• Brazilian citizenship or residency.
• Proven academic excellence.
• PhD or MD degree from an accredited institution of higher learning (obtained no more than 4 years prior to the date of application for this fellowship); alternatively, a confirmation from such an institution of fulfillment of the requirements of a doctorate, including submission of a thesis.
• Brazilian postdoctoral fellows already at the Weizmann Institute are also eligible to apply.
• Write a one-page description on how you envision participating in and/or supporting the development of Brazil’s frontier science research upon completion of training at the Weizmann Institute.
• Research plan in the Life and Health sciences, or at interfaces between Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with the Life and Health Sciences.

The  Ralf W. Hahn Postdoctoral Fellowship was established to strengthen the connection between Argentinian Institutions of higher learning and the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Candidates may apply for this fellowship in any field of research at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

This program provides a three-year fellowship through WIS. Please note that acceptance to the program depends on approval by the Feinberg Graduate School; acceptance by a host research lab at Weizmann Institute; and academic achievements.

Minimum requirements

The fellowship is awarded to exceptionally qualified Argentinian candidates. Applicants for this program must meet the following requirements:

• Hold Argintinian citizenship or residency.
• Meet the academic requirements of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
• Have a PhD or MD degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, or alternatively, a confirmation from such an institution of fulfillment of the requirements of a doctorate, including submission of a thesis.
• Have received confirmation of the doctorate no more than four years prior to the designated start date.
