The Morton and Gladys Pickman Professor of Structural Biology
Joel's CV
AChE
Together with Prof. Israel Silman (Neurobiology), we are studying the 3D structure/function of nervous system proteins, such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), cholinesterase-like adhesion molecules (CLAMs), snake toxins, β-glucosidase, β-secretase & paraoxonase. Our goal is to find new leads for treating neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's Disease and autism. We are also studying intrinsically unstructured proteins and how proteins adapt to extreme environments, e.g. halotolerant proteins.
We've established the Israel Structural Proteomics Center (ISPC)
& the Jean Goldwurm 3D Visualization Theater (protein structures in 3D). We're coordinating the EC Forum for European Structural Proteomics (FESP) and have edited: Structural Proteomics and Its Impact on Life Sciences .
We've also created Proteopedia, the collaborative, 3D encyclopedia of proteins and other molecules, e.g. see AChE. For a podcast interview with Joel Sussman, see Meet the Scientists.
