Storytelling

Special session (open to the entire WIS community)
Storytelling: Value oriented thinking and communication
Mr. Omri Avisaf

Organizations invest many resources in recruiting new customers and retaining old ones. Many emphasize the quality of their product or their competitive price, but in most cases the unique value that can really differentiate you from your competition lies mainly in the experience you will be able to provide the customer. The experience begins when you really “see” the customer, understand what his real needs are, listen to him and tailor the solution so that it will be most valuable to him. In the “Value-Oriented Communication” lecture, we will learn that in order to become an asset and not a burden to the organization you work in, you must understand that "the customer" is your manager, employee or colleague.

What will we learn? Operative tools that will help you frame your goal while putting your client's need at the center and motivating him without authority.

Session 1
Team management and motivation
Prof. Yair Berson

Managers in the modern era face many challenges, among them are achieving results together with and by the people with whom they work. The workshop will focus on the benefits of teamwork while zooming in the characteristics of the individual such as personality and motivation, characteristics of the team, formation and proficiency, and contextual factors, such as the organizational culture in which the team operates. The workshop will include an experiential learning that will allow each participant to know how they perform in a team, the extent to which each participant influence other team members, and the added contribution of team work to each individual performance. In addition to the exercise, the session will also include a frontal lecture followed by a discussion that is based on recent research belonging to the content world of team research and the why an individual's characteristics combine with team characteristics can enhance performance in organizations.

Session 2
The art of persuassion and public speaking

Dr. Michelle Stein Teer

'Stage Fright' is a common phenomenon among people who need to convey messages effectively in front of audiences of any kind. In all aspects of life we are required to deliver ideas, not always knowing how to present them in a systematic, practical, emotional and creative manner as one. Rhetoric & Persuasion Art lecture aims to develop speakers who say 'Yes' to every opportunity

Session 3
Negotiation thinking

Dr. Ronen Hoffman, Mr. Hanan Rosen

“Negotiation Thinking” is the ability to conduct a complex negotiation processes efficiently and with sophistication, over time and in a changing reality. This thinking offers methods above and beyond basic negotiation abilities and provides the business managers with tools to face the organization challenges. The goal of the session is to expose participants to the principles of the negotiation management “toolbox” in various aspects: identification and diagnostic tools for the negotiator to analyze structural situations, the systemic psychology in which the negotiation is carried out, the analytic methods that use to set the course of the negotiation and its strategic foundations, and implementation tools that include techniques for persuasion and coping with crises during the negotiation.

Session 4
Financial thinking
Prof. Dan Segal

The session will focus on the analysis of two events in U.S. companies – Groupon and DreamWorks; events from which we can learn about the importance of accounting information for making investment decisions and company management. The importance of accounting information coupled with the inherent flexibility of accounting rules provide fertile ground for making accounting decisions influenced by individual incentives, such as salary and employment security, or in other words, earnings management and the financial statements.

Special Q&A panel: From PhD to high-tech - with Dr. Daniel Dikovsky, Stratasys Ltd.

Session 5
Systematic innovation management
Prof. Jacob Goldenberg

Creativity is commonly considered as something “outside the box”, not systematic, that requires a spark (of genius sometimes) and belongs to few and exceptional people. In reality there are no boxes. There are only constraints and challenges, and creativity is within the framework they create and not outside of it. Creativity can be improved just as any other conceptual or managerial skill, even more, up to date approaches engage in systematic methods for identifying the spark of elusive or hidden ideas. The method defines the creative process as a conscious activation of organized analytical tools; it enables the production of new and successful ideas without a need for coincidence or sudden sparks, but rather as the result of an organized process of thought that operates defined thinking tools and has a broad range of applications.

Nanobusiness for scientists

Sponsored by the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation

The unique “NANObusiness” lecture series is a collaboration between the Feinberg Graduate School at the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Executive Education and Continuing Studies at the IDC Herzliya. This lecture series is part of the Career Development Program that the Feinberg Graduate School offers to its students. The goal is to expose research students in science to basic concepts of the business world, and provide them with the necessary knowledge to develop business-like thinking based on the core academic clusters of Business Administration. This knowledge should help participants in taking their first steps toward the next stage in their career, as well as improve their employment potential in the competitive job market, as leaders of R&D teams, entrepreneurs in startup companies, in leading professional positions in government ministries, as lead researchers in academic institutions, in the educational system etc. The program combines academic lectures given by top IDC faculty members with experiential learning based on case study analysis.

Session 1
Managerial skills: Motivating employees for excellent performance

Managers in the modern era face many challenges, among them are achieving results together with and by the people with whom they work. At a time when the goals are ambitious, the tasks complex and the timetables challenging, managers who succeed in balancing between the needs of their employees and the needs of the organization have an advantage. In this session we will attempt to understand the factors that motivate people at the work place and we will focus on management behaviors in which we can maximize employees’ commitment to the organizational tasks. We will practice the skills of giving constructive criticism, empowering praise, and effective management of team meetings. The session will include a lecture (30%) accompanied by discussions in which we will use current research from the world of ‘employee engagement’, and experiential learning (70%) which will include exercises and simulations.

Session 2
Project management

Business understanding combined with basic accounting knowledge makes it possible to reach insights at a relatively high speed. The ability to analyze financial statements is an important business tool for the understanding of the financial implications of decision-making, which can shed light on future opportunities and possibilities. A budget is an essential tool in a competitive business environment, the ability to intelligently plan and forecast the business future for each unit will ensure a practical and existential advantage. This core academic cluster aims to introduce participants to key concepts and practical tools for planning and outlining business and work plans – presenting the difference between an intelligently crafted business forecast and a profit and loss statement that reflects the past. As part of their studies, participants will practice the tools and work methods that allow executives to successfully track and manage budgets in a rapidly- changing and uncertain environment.

Session 3
Entrepreneurship management

Many people have excellent entrepreneurial ideas; the question is how do we take these ideas to the next level? The goal of the workshop is to provide practical tools for strategic thinking and developing business models for new ventures. The workshop structure consists of: introduction and practice using Ideation techniques, group work that will produce new ideas the participants will have to sharp and formulate using the Canvas Model, while using authentication techniques that will be taught in the process. The Lean Startup Methodology and the Canvas Model are important business growth tools for every entrepreneur.

Session 4
Negotiation thinking

Session 5
What Can We Learn from financial statements

The session will focus on the analysis of two events in U.S. companies – Groupon and DreamWorks; events from which we can learn about the importance of accounting information for making investment decisions and company management. The importance of accounting information coupled with the inherent flexibility of accounting rules provide fertile ground for making accounting decisions influenced by individual incentives, such as salary and employment security, or in other words, earnings management and the financial statements.

Session 6
Systematic innovation management
