The Karyn Kupcinet International Science School
Summer Study for Foreign Science Students

Summer 2009

A small number of undergraduate foreign students (from second year onward) in the Exact and Natural Sciences will be accepted for study during the summer of 2009 by the Weizmann Institute of Science. You may apply during your final year of university for participation immediately following graduation. Students are given the opportunity to take part in a research project in their fields of interest. Most of the participants will receive a modest allowance to cover living expenses.

To be admitted to the program, the candidate must (a) give evidence of a serious interest in research (previous experience is an advantage but not a requirement) and (b) be prepared to study for a minimum of 10 weeks. The maximum period of study is 4 months.

Students must have a grade point average of 3.6 out of 4.0 or the equivalent.

The application forms should be completed as fully and specifically as possible, indicating departments in which you are interested, which can be obtained from the list of Current Research Projects. Candidates will be screened only after receipt up to two letters of reference, plus an official list of all university grades. After screening, the applications will be circulated among the various departments, which make the final decision.

Students are required to list, on the application form, three departments in which they are interested in working. Please note that generally, the Science Teaching Department, Experimental Animals Center, Biological Services, and Chemical Services do not accept summer students, so it is not advisable to list them.

At the end of the summer study period, students will deliver a 10-minute lecture on their study, submit a written abstract of this lecture, approved by the student's research advisor. A student who has satisfactorily completed the requirements will be issued a certificate of participation in the program.

Accommodation on campus is not guaranteed, but we will do our best to arrange alternative accommodation. Further information will be supplied later.

Notification of the student's arrival date and hour must be given at least two weeks in advance of arrival. Students participating in the program need only a regular tourist visa.

Upon arrival at the Institute, the student is obligated to pay the medical insurance that is required during the work period. (Illnesses contracted before arrival in Israel are not covered by insurance provided at the Institute.)

Students are expected to be on campus between 1 June and 31 August.

The facilities of the Meyer and Shirley Weisgal Recreation Center, located on the Institute grounds, are available to all summer students at low membership fees. These facilities include tennis courts, swimming pools, basketball, etc.
