The Missing Link for Transforming Academic Excellence into Practical, Scalable Solutions
Challenges spark innovation, but how do we ensure that scientific discoveries translate into real-world impact?
In an article published in Nature Biotechnology, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science highlight the inherent gap between basic discovery and real-world application. Despite the success of technology transfer offices, most discoveries never reach development stages, partly due to structural barriers and limited early-stage support.
The article, by Dr. Sharon Fireman, Prof. Prof. Anthony (Tony) H. Futerman, and Prof. Irit Sagi, describes “Bina,” a translational research and innovation unit established in 2021 to address this gap. Operating within the academic environment, Bina provides scientific guidance, industry connections, milestone-based funding, and training programs, enabling researchers to explore applications alongside basic research.
