WG2 - String Phenomenology
Group Leader:
Prof. Michela Petrini (FR)
Vice Leader:
Prof. Angel Uranga (ES)
String Phenomenology in an established and active area in string theory which faces the challenges of connecting it with the observed Particle Physics theories, like the Standard Model or its extensions at higher energies, as well as addressing issues related to the early inflationary epoch of the Universe and its ultimate fate, controlled by the nature of the dark energy.
One of the main goals of WG2, is the development of tools to enlarge the class of Particle Physics theories that can be constructed within string theory. This requires improving on different techniques in heterotic orbifolds and Calabi-Yau compactifications, and in constructing type II orientifolds, and their non-perturbative generalizations via F-theory.
Another line of research is the study of generalized flux compactifications, and the development of the relevant new mathematical tools, in order to address the question of moduli stabilization, i.e. the removal of the massless scalars that plague standard string compactifications (so as to improve the phenomenological virtues of the models). An important point in the analysis will also include the inclusion of non-perturbative D-brane instanton effects.
These ingredients will clarify the structure of phenomenologically viable constructions with full moduli stabilization, and will offer new insights into the string imprint on the most timely questions of micro- and macro-physics, including the electroweak Higgs sector, the existence and nature of supersymmetry and its breaking, early universe inflation, and the cosmological constant and dark energy.

Supersymmetry breaking in String Theory
Isaac Newton Institute Cambridge, United Kingdom
EventSupersymmetry breaking in String TheoryLocation Isaac Newton Institute Cambridge, United Kingdom March 10, 2014 - March 14, 2014 Supersymmetry breaking in string theory is a crucial issue, both for formal and more applied aspects within string phenomenology, and in string theory more generally. Any string theoretic setup aiming at addressing phenomenological issues, both in particle physics and in cosmology, has to address supersymmetry breaking. On the other hand, supersymmetry is so deeply rooted in string theory that it is difficult to break it without spoiling many desirable features, or at least without losing analytical control. For instance, stability of non-supersymmetric solutions or frameworks in string theory is often an unresolved issue.
This workshop is aimed at bringing together experts in the field, to discuss the current status of supersymmetry breaking in string theory and future directions of the field. There will be morning sessions with overview talks and a discussion session. The afternoons are reserved for individual discussions as well as shorter talks on more specialised subjects. String Phenomenology and Cosmology
GGI Florence, Italy
EventString Phenomenology and CosmologyLocation GGI Florence, Italy October 19, 2015 - October 30, 2015 Week 1: 19-23 October 2015 - School
Week 2: 26-30 October 2015 - Workshop.
The theme of this two-fold activity is to bring together string theorists, particle physicists and cosmologists, and to foster a dialog between theory and data. Speakers include on the one hand expert phenomenologists familiar with current and near-future experiments (ranging from colliders to satellite experiments), and on the other hand theorists, both model builders and more formal string theorists. Holography and Dualities 2016: New Advances in String and Gauge Theory
Nordita Stockholm, Sweden
EventHolography and Dualities 2016: New Advances in String and Gauge TheoryLocation Nordita Stockholm, Sweden March 30, 2016 - April 22, 2016 The holographic duality has provided new insights into the physics of strongly-coupled systems by bridging together different subjects that before were thought to be completely unrelated, such as hydrodynamics and physics of black holes, string theory and strongly-coupled phenomena in condensed-matter physics, integrable systems and and non-perturbative behavior of gauge fields. Symmetries have played an important role in these developments and have led to development of new non-perturbative methods based for example on integrability, bootstrap and localization.
The aim of the program is to discuss new developments in dualities and holography, with focus on
- Gauge/string dualities
- Integrability
- Symmetries in string theory
- Supersymmetric localization
- Bootstrap methods
- Applications of holography in QCD and condensed-matter systems

EventThe String Theory UniverseLocation University of Milano - Bicocca MIlano, Italy February 20, 2017 - February 24, 2017 This is the final conference of the COST Action MP1210 The String Theory Universe. It will also continue the long-standing tradition of the annual European Workshop in String Theory and related topics, coinciding with the "XXII European Workshop on String Theory''. The scientific content will reflect the research activities of EU groups participating in the Action, which have been organized in Working Groups. Main subjects will cover gauge/gravity correspondence (fundaments and applications), string phenomenology and black holes, quantum gravity and quantum information. The Conference will provide an overview on the main recent developments in these subjects together with the main results, achievements and innovative mathematical tools that have been developed in the four-year duration of the Action.
