Appreciation event for volunteers within the WIS community

A special event was held for all the volunteers in appreciation of, and to thank them for their dedication and commitment, which advances us toward a slightly more equal society

A competition for students who promote diversity around campus and beyond, led by the Diversity and Inclusion Office, together with the Feinberg Graduate School, has been held for the second year running – and this year, the competition was tough!

We met great students and postdocs who are doing amazing things: a doctor who volunteers at the Levinski Clinic to treat asylum seekers; students who volunteer at an Arab school in Lod and teach mathematics to those in need; students who established a women's forum that provides knowledge and support to female students at the Institute, and other inspiring stories!

Visit of Bedouin students of the Tamar Center

During a special visit yesterday here on campus, led by Weizmann Institute's Diversity and Inclusion Office, Bedouin students of the Tamar Center in the Negev, South of Israel, visited the Faculty of Physics, in which they got to meet with and tour the labs of Profs. Roee Ozeri and Nir Davidson, and learn about their research. Prof. Yosef Nir delivered an interesting lecture about matter and antimatter.

We see great importance in strengthening the relationship between the Weizmann Institute of Science and students from the Bedouin diaspora, in order to open windows of opportunity for them to pursue advanced studies at the Weizmann Institute. For us, this is just the beginning of further collaborations, and we hope that these will bear fruit in the near future

    Ramadan kareem everyone

In honor of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, we held here on campus a great event during which we heard stories about the holiday customs, enjoyed good music and tasted a variety of fine foods.

The event, led by Weizmann's Diversity and Inclusion Office together with FGS students, reflected the spirit of the Weizmann Institute of Science, which aspires to be an international, diverse, inclusive and equal space for men and women of all cultures and beliefs.

    "Ramadan Nights" tour

    Tour program:

The tour will be organized by the "Shared Paths" company, which operates guided tours on the occasion of Ramadan in a variety of Arab localities. The tour will take place in Jaljulia, a local council located near the Horashim interchange and has 10,000 residents and will be guided by a local guide.

On a tour, we will sense the special texture of Arab localities, the combination of the rural and the urban, a kind of time travel between the past, present and future. We will walk through the alleys of the ancient center, return in time through the ancient khan in the town, visit a bakery and the old sugar factory and the legend around it. From there we will continue to the highlight, the magnificent “Al Rawda” Mosque recently built and considered one of the most beautiful in Israel. During the tour, we will get to experience the atmosphere of the month of Ramadan, the stories, customs and smells.

The international diversity day at WI

A special statement from the Weizmann Institute to mark International Diversity Day

Today, May 21, 2020 people around the globe will be commemorating International Diversity Day – a date first declared by the UN in 2001.

This day is an opportunity for us at the Weizmann Institute of Science to celebrate our human mosaic of scientists, students and staff.

It is, as well, an opportunity to remind ourselves of our commitment to create and preserve a research, study and work environment that is diverse, inclusive and which advances equality and fairness to all who are different from us in gender, ethnic group, religious belief, status or in any other way. Our environment must be one that promotes equal rights and equal opportunity, and does not tolerate discriminatory or racist behavior.

In fact, diversity is one of the more significant elements contributing to excellence in science, and so in recognition of our debt to diversity and to humanity, we are pleased to work together to ensure that the Institute’s multicultural nature is upheld – without borders, either physical or symbolic.
