Previous observational programs have focused on regions of strong frontal currents, such as the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio, where conditions are favorable for submesoscale instabilities. Here we present results from a unique times series of hydrographic observations, obtained at submesoscale resolution, from a region with a weak mean flow. As part of the Ocean Surface Mixing, Ocean Submesoscale Interaction Study (OSMOSIS) program, glider pairs occupied a small 20 km by 20 km region over the Porcupine Abyssal Plain in the northeast Atlantic from September 2012 to September 2013. Measurements from the gliders were complemented by a suite of nine mooring arrays in the same region. We analyze the in situ evolution in the context of the background conditions from satellite data, including sea surface temperature, sea surface height and surface forcing from wind stress reanalysis. We also analyze three months of a 1/48-degree ocean model in the same region. This data set provides an opportunity to study the physical processes that contribute to upper ocean mixed-layer variability over a full seasonal cycle. -

Soft Matter and Biomaterialsצרו קשר פרטים נוספים Show full text description of Cryogenic-temperature transmission electron microscopy (cryo...» Cryogenic-temperature transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) is now a standard tool in the study of complex liquids, i.e., liquid systems with aggregates or building blocks on the nanometric scale. Methodologies have been developed to help capture the nanostructure of liquid systems, while preserving their original state at a given concentration and temperature. Cryo-TEM is now widely used to study synthetic, biological, and medical systems. Originally developed for aqueous systems, it has been also applied successfully in the study of non-aqueous systems, even in unusual solvents, such as strong acids.
Recent developments in high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) have made it an ideal tool for the study of nanoparticles and colloids in viscous systems or in systems containing large objects, hundreds of nanometers and larger, in which small (nanometric) features are to be imaged, e.g., hydrogels or body cells. Such system cannot be studied by cryo-TEM. Liquid nanostructured systems can now be studied by cryogenic-temperature scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), using much-improved cryogenic specimen holders and transfer systems, even without conductive coating. In recent years we have developed a novel specimen preparation methodology for cryo-SEM specimens that preserves the original nanostructure of labile complex liquids at specified composition and temperature, quite similarly to what has been done in cryo-TEM.
In my talk I will describe briefly the state-of-the-technology of cryo-TEM and cryo-SEM, and will demonstrate various variants of the methodology that allow us to study a wide range of soft matter systems, taking advantage also of the combination of cryo-TEM and cryo-SEM

In the meantime, truly exciting (quantum) physics arises, which might be harnessed into novel functionality. Here I will show that both highly ordered and highly disordered inorganic-organic structures offer unique test bed systems for novel electronic devices at the nanoscale. I focus on two promising systems: ordered 1D molecular wires and disordered nanoparticle networks. In the 1D molecular wires we have discovered an exceptionally large, room-temperature, small-field magnetoresistance effect [1]. This ultrahigh magnetoresistance effect is ascribed to the dramatic consequence of spin blockade in 1D electron transport. In the nanoparticle networks, we demonstrate, using artificial evolution, that this designless system can be configured into any basic Boolean logic gate with a very high degree of stability and reproducibility [2].

While segregation of visual and auditory signals has been studied extensively, little is known about the segregation of odors.
I will describe our study aiming to provide a description of the behavioral ability of macrosmatic mammals to segregate odors. Specifically, we asked how the ability to segregate odors relates to features of the individual odors that are mixed. We developed a behavioral task for mice in which they were trained to report the presence of specific target odorants embedded in random background mixtures. We found that mice are highly capable of segregating an odor-figure from a background. Relating behavioral accuracy to the representations of target and background odors by olfactory receptor neurons, we found that the difficulty of segregation is not related to the similarity between odors, but rather is explained by the amount of overlap in the representations of background and target odors.
