The mechanisms by which our brain is wired during development are still a fundamental mystery in biology. In our lab, we utilize the awsome genetic power of Drosophila to study the molecular mechanisms that govern the wiring and remodeling of developing neural circuits. Neuronal remodeling is critical for sculpting the mature nervous system and when defective, it is implicated in a wide range of neuro-psychiatric disorders including autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. Moreover, since remodeling involves both destructive and constructive events, our studies shed light on axon degeneration and regeneration during development, disease and following injury.
