The Computational Approaches in Science Education (CASEd) Lab explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and science education. Our research is organized around three complementary pillars:
Understanding Learning: using AI and data science to study learning and teaching, and to generate insights into how learners and teachers engage with knowledge, technology, and one another.
Supporting Learning: developing AI-based methods and tools that enhance learning and teaching, with a particular emphasis on supporting teachers and enabling effective, personalized learning experiences.
Learning about AI: designing curricula, learning environments, and professional development programs that help students and teachers develop the knowledge and competencies needed to understand, use, and critically engage with AI.
Through these pillars run recurring themes such as Personalized Learning, Human-AI interaction, Trust in AI, AI assessment, and teacher-AI collaboration. These themes connect and shape our research, allowing us to investigate fundamental questions about learning while developing practical approaches for improving education in an AI-rich world.
By bringing together learning sciences, AI, and science education, the CASEd Lab seeks to advance our understanding of learning, improve educational practices, and prepare learners and educators for a future in which AI is an integral part of both society and education.
Application domains: The application domains on which we focus range from blended-learning environments for K-12 science education, through Intelligent Tutoring Systems designed to teach specific concepts, to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
Join the lab! We are always looking for bright students, with background in Computer Science (Algorithms, Machine Learning, AI), Cognitive/Behavioral/Educational Sciences, and hands-on programming experience (preferably in R/Python).
