Mathematics

 

The Department of Science Teaching has been engaged in research and development in mathematics education since 1967. Over the years, its work has focused on the study of mathematics teaching, learning, and thinking, as well as on advancing mathematics education through the development, implementation, and evaluation of curricula, teacher professional development programs, and educational resources. Research in the department addresses a wide range of issues related to the construction of mathematical knowledge, teaching and learning processes, teachers’ professional growth, and the design of learning environments. A central focus of our work is understanding the conditions and characteristics that support meaningful learning in mathematics and developing theoretical and practical frameworks that foster deep conceptual understanding, mathematical thinking, and active learner engagement.

The research-based educational resources we develop include textbooks, workbooks, teacher guides, facilitator materials, teaching simulations, educational games, and digital learning tasks. These resources serve both to support teaching and learning and as contexts for research. They provide students, teachers, and teacher educators with tools, guidance, and support grounded in contemporary theories of learning and instruction. Many of our studies are conducted in authentic educational settings and are often integrated with teachers’ professional learning processes, thereby contributing both to a deeper understanding of educational practices and to the advancement of

research in mathematics education.
Research in the department is frequently conducted alongside teacher professional learning initiatives. Through empirical, theoretical, and design-based research, we seek to deepen understanding of mathematics teaching and learning processes, contribute to the international research community in mathematics education, and inform educational policy and evidence-based instructional practices at both local and international levels.
