Brief

The purpose of the project is to promote scientific literacy and mathematical literacy, as well as to establish the combination between the two among middle school science and technology students. To this end, learning and teaching materials were developed, including interactive materials, for 9th grade students in excellence tracks. Through them, students learn about the phenomena of health and disease, while using the mathematical skills and content that are taught in high school and those defined for the PISA tests. In addition, they practice mathematical modeling based on authentic data obtained in life science studies.

The learning materials include 12 study units, each of which deals with a different health topic. Some of the mathematical skills and content are repeated in different contexts in different units, inviting students to a deeper understanding and to practice skills in a variety of contexts. In this way, it is possible for students to connect mathematics to practical aspects of everyday life and science, as suggested in the PISA tests.

So far, over 100 classes from all over the country have participated in the program. The development and assimilation processes are accompanied by research for the purpose of improving the contents and examining their effect on the scientific and mathematical literacy of students as well as to characterize the professional development of science teachers who teach mathematically oriented contents.

This project was funded by the Trump Foundation as part of the foundation's move to promote excellence in middle school.
