Brief
This project aims to improve cancer literacy via cancer education. Our group is developing interactive instructional materials to facilitate the teaching of biological mechanisms involved in cancer development to 10th graders. The project is supported by the Moross Integrated Cancer Center (MICC) at the Weizmann institute.
This project provides an opportunity to explore the ways in which learning mechanisms regarding a well-known biological phenomenon, on which a huge amount of information exists in the media, can benefit health literacy. We intend to characterize the progression of the student understanding in the field of cancer, and to identify the difficulties they encounter during this progression, followed by an evaluation of the effects of mechanistic understanding on the students’ ability to critically use information about cancer, and on their perception of illness.
