Postdoctoral Fellowships

Types of fellowships

There are several types/levels of postdoctoral fellowships at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS):

  • The incentive supplement is awarded to recipients of competitive external fellowships with a monthly value in NIS that is below the level of the incentive fellowship.
  • This fellowship comes with a travel allowance of $2,000 per year, for conferences and professional training.

Koshland postdoctoral fellowship

  • NIS 11,760  per month (125% of the regular WIS fellowship)
  • The Koshland prize recognizes academic excellence, and it is awarded on a competitive basis to outstanding new postdoctoral fellows at WIS.

Senior postdoctoral fellowship

  • NIS 11,760  per month (125% of the regular WIS fellowship)
  • The senior postdoctoral fellowship is an excellence-based career development program to prepare outstanding fellows for independent research leader positions.
  • This fellowship comes with a travel allowance of $3,000 per year, for conferences and professional training.

External (competitive) fellowships (that are paid through the WIS)
As defined by the external foundation, up to a limit of NIS 13,125  per month.

Principles

The following principles govern the fellowship system at the WIS:

Substitution
External fellowships (competitive and non-competitive), either replace the regular WIS fellowship or fund part of it. In other words, they substitute for the regular WIS fellowship and are not awarded in addition to it.

External vs WIS fellowship
WIS fellowships and external fellowships may not be awarded simultaneously. If the level of an external fellowship is higher than the regular WIS fellowship then the postdoc is entitled to keep the balance (subject to the above-mentioned limit). However, if the level of the external fellowship is lower than the regular WIS fellowship then the fellow is still paid the difference - up to 110% of the regular WIS fellowship.

Travel Allowance
The FGS travel allowance will NOT be provided to fellows holding an external fellowship with a travel allowance that is higher than the corresponding FGS travel allowance. However, if the travel allowance provided by the external fellowship is lower than the corresponding FGS allowance, the balance will be provided to the fellow.

About the travel allowance

What Does It Cover

  • Flight expenses, room and board, and registration dues at local and international scientific conferences.
  • International courses, such as winter or summer schools.
  • Visits to laboratories and research groups abroad for the purpose of research collaboration.

Proportional Allocation of the Travel Allowance

The fiscal year at the Weizmann Institute starts on October 1 and ends on the following September 30. If you start your training after October 1, you will receive a partial allocation of funds, proportional to the remaining time until September 30.

Expiration of the Travel Allowance

Eligibility to use the travel allowance expires on the day that your postdoctoral training period ends. In other words, the money is designated to cover expenses only for eligible travel costs incurred during the training period.

In case of an External Fellowship

Travel allowances for holders of external fellowships will be dealt with in the same manner as the fellowship itself. The FGS travel allowance will not be provided to fellows holding an external fellowship with a travel allowance that is higher than the corresponding FGS travel allowance. However, if the travel allowance provided by the external fellowship is lower than the corresponding FGS allowance, the Feinberg Graduate School will pay the balance.
