Orion Center for Earth-Based Astronomy
Prof. Eran Ofek
The Orion Center for Earth-Based Astronomy is advancing experimental astrophysics through the design and construction of telescopes and instrumentation that enable cutting-edge science, the construction and operation of the novel Weizmann Astrophysical Observatory in Israel’s Negev desert, and the development of innovative tools for analyzing astronomical data.
The new telescopes, instruments, and tools are used by Weizmann scientists to investigate a wide range of topics, from the formation and evolution of the Solar System, via the search for exoplanets and the study of their atmospheres, to the origin of heavy elements in the Universe.
The Center also strengthens the Weizmann Institute’s research capacity by supporting newly recruited experimental astrophysicists and funding bold, innovative projects led by Weizmann faculty.
