Brief

School-based professional learning communities for mathematics teachers that combine lesson study with the VIDEO-LM lenses.

Math-VALUE is a design research project consisting of video-based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for practicing mathematics teachers at the secondary level. This model combines the framework designed for the VIDEO-LM PD courses with the well-established Japanese lesson study approach, and introduces a novel structure of facilitation. The project, presently in its pilot stage, is implemented as a multi-site (schools) and multi-year setting, aiming at institutionalizing and sustaining school-based environments devoted to the improvement of teaching practices. Teachers work within the PLC on collective planning, implementation and analysis of mathematics lessons. The project is accompanied by systematic data collection and analysis in order to explore the strengths and limitations of the model and its potential sustainability in schools throughout Israel.

The overall design of the project is funded by the Weizmann Institute of Science, the implementation of the PLCs is funded by the Mofet Institute ("Hashkafa"), and the research is funded by ISF, Grant no. 1219/20.
