LGBTQ Association

The Weizmann Institute of Science LGBTQ association serves as the home of LGBTQ students on campus. We strive to provide a non-discriminatory environment for our community in our regular meetings. In addition, we adopt an active approach towards inclusiveness of LGBTQ individuals on campus, promoting the national LGBTQ students’ association’s ‘Safe Campus’ initiative. Our association serves as a place where (not only) students can feel free to express themselves as they really are.

The Weizmann Institute of Science LGBTQ association was founded in 2019, a pioneering initiative at a time when the issue of diversity was hardly discussed on campus. Since then, we have enjoyed increasing support from Institute management. Among our recent successes:

January 2020

Seminar hosting Prof. Uzi Even, physicist and first openly gay member of the Knesset (Israeli parliament). Prof. Even was discharged from a confidential position in the military when his sexual orientation was discovered. Years later, he brought about the legal change that allowed LGBTQ people to serve in the military uninhibited.

Pride Day

June 2020

First ever letter from the president of WIS commemorating pride month.

September 2020

Webinar hosting Prof. Claire Thomas, creator of ‘the 100% sign’ (include link). Sample stickers can be found by contacting Dan Klein.

January 2021

Webinar hosting: Dr. Ben Johnson, Head of Communities & Engagement at Springer Nature.

Dr. Johnson will discuss what the publishing group is doing to amplify the voices of LGBTQ researchers, as well as challenges he faced as an LGBTQ scientist.
