Import/Export of New Strains

  • Import/export of new strains from fresh preimplantation embryos
  • Import/export new strains from cryopreserved embryos
  • Import/export new strains from cryopreserved sperm

Shipping: Frozen embryos are shipped in a liquid nitrogen dry shipper. Frozen sperm may be shipped in a dry shipper or on dry ice.
Fresh blastocyst stage embryos may also be imported/exported for immediate embryo transfer upon receipt. This requires a high level of coordination in advance between the shipping and receiving facilities.
Please contact Carmit Rozenberg-Katzav for shipping.

Health status: Following the receipt of health report for the sperm/embryo donors from the sending institution, our QC will decide whether these mice can be imported and whether the recovery will be carried out in the quarantine unit, the isolators or the transgenic facility.

Risks: Success of recovery depends chiefly on the quality of the material that we receive. If it has not been frozen well, then we will not be able to recover live animals. In our experience if the embryo/sperm we receive is good, then the line can be reconstituted. It is advisable to check provider what quality control has been carried out on the shipped material, and to request at least to straws of frozen material.

Speed: sperm/embryos - ~ one month to send + 3 week pregnancy + 6- 8 weeks till pups are fertile = total ~15 weeks. One tends to get many more pups from IVF then from embryos.

IACUC and Internal Service Orders

An IACUC code and an Internal Services order specific for embryo transfer/IVF is required in addition to the IACUC and order for import or a new line. IVF/embryo transfer will not be scheduled before an order for IVF/embryo transfer has been received.  For Instructions.

Once you have received an IACUC code a request must be made in Internal Services >Transgenic and Embryo Manipulation Lab. Fill in all fields. *Item select # 15. Importing Line from Frozen Sperm or # 14. Importing Line from Frozen as appropriate
