Chemical (compositional) gradients in thin films cause surface tension gradients. It is reported and analyzed how the surface flow (Marangoni flow) induced by these gradients influences the spreading and coalescence behavior of sessile droplets [1-3].

In my group a number of new functional materials such as La1-xCexCrO3 (materials with tunable band gap and magnetic properties), CeScO3 (with unusual reversible conversion to fluorite lattice), BiFeO3 derivatives (multiferroic materials), FeTiTaO6 (a new lead free ferroelectric relaxor material), GdSc1-xInxO¬3 (tunable dielectrics) have been prepared and characterized. Perovskite type materials with trivalent Ce3+ could be successfully prepared from precursor powders by a controlled heating under low PO2. Several interesting pyrochlore based oxygen storage materials, viz. Ce2Zr2O7+x (x = 0.0 to 1.0) and Gd2-xCexZr2O7 (x = 0.0 to 2.0), have been prepared. The retention of an ordered cationic sub-lattice even up to fully oxidized composition (Ce2Zr2O8) was established by Neutron Diffraction studies. A composite approach is also being followed to design new functional materials. Thin films of some of these materials have been fabricated by using a drop-on-demand ink-jet printing technique. Recently 1D BaTiO3-Co was prepared by a template method, which showed a weak magnetic-dielectric coupling. A major focus of this talk will be on role of synthesis in preparation of new materials.

From the dramatic magnetars to Rotating Radio Transients, from radio pulsars to Isolated Neutron Stars, from Central Compact Objects to millisecond pulsars, observational manifestations of neutron stars are surprisingly varied, with most properties totally unpredicted. The challenge is to establish an overarching physical theory of neutron stars and their birth properties that can explain this great diversity. Here I survey the disparate neutron stars classes, describe their properties, and highlight recent results. I describe the current status of efforts at physical "grand unification" of this wealth of observational phenomena, and show that neutron star magnetic field strength must play a key role.

Here I show that this motion is instead due to the effects of molecular motors with cells that lead to fluctuations that are completely non-equilibrium in character. In addition, I describe the effects of cell volume on this motion. -

Assessment of aerosol radiative effect on climate heavily relies on models that often assume aerosols as external mixture of spherical homogeneous particles. This may not represent diversity of aerosol compositions and shapes and provide uncertainty in aerosol absorption and scattering ability, as well as influence on properties of clouds. The climate models can be tuned by measurements; however, the measurements themselves have limited sensitivity to aerosol chemical composition, mixing state and non-sphericity. Resent achievements in satellites and ground-based aerosol optical measurements show clear tendency of increasing amount of measured spectral, angular and polarimetric information resulting in a larger number of the derived aerosol characteristics, including those related to chemical composition, mixing state and shape. In my work I examine influence of aerosol composition, external and internal mixtures and non-sphericity effect on accurate assessment of climatic radiative forcing. In parallel, the efforts are dedicated to development of numerical tools and measurement approaches that will provide information about aerosol composition and mixing state on large scales using space-borne or ground-based optical observations. Parameterization of aerosol optical characteristics in these developments implies involvement of knowledge on aerosol chemistry and microphysics available from laboratory studies and in situ sampling. -
