Bioinformatics at the department of Molecular Genetics

With the emergence of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies it has become almost impossible to conduct a biological study without using bioinformatics. As the departmental bioinformatician, my efforts are devoted to promote and support the use of computational tools for advanced biological research. I am here to assist and train department members with the experimental design as well as in the interpretation. My expertise includes, amongst others, analysis of diverse applications of NGS: genetic variation detection, RNA-seq and de-novo assembly. Since, the analysis of the NGS experiment is always just the starting point, I provide the guidance to discuss and brainstorm the ways for the down-stream analyses that will signify the biological understanding of the data.

Resources: Next generation sequence analysis is highly intensive and requires high power computers. The department is equipped with 3 computer nodes allowing a total access of 768 GB memory. The nodes are part of the WEXAC supercomputer, designed to run jobs in parallel.

Software: A dedicated PC station, located next to room 406A of the Meyer Building, is available for use. The PC station contains many useful tools, for example, Partek for clustering and PCA analysis; Persaus for analysis of mass-spec data; tools for multiple alignment and sequence analysis; mobaXterm, to open a unix interface and more.
